Mercedes Benz G-Wagon goes green– gets first mild-hybrid engine – Car News

Mercedes Benz recently unveiled a facelift of the G-Wagon. This is the second update to the current generation of the luxury off-roading SUV since it made its debut in 2018. The Indian market earlier received the G350d and G400d iterations of the SUV besides the all-powerful AMG G63.

2025 Mercedes Benz G-Wagon: Mild-hybrid powertrain

The German marque has decided to go green with the latest iteration of the G-Wagon which gets a mild-hybrid tech for the first time. The entry-level variant, renamed as G450d, retains the same 3.0-litre straight-six diesel mill but now is paired with a 48V integrated starter generator (ISG). The engine pushes out 357 bhp and 750 Nm of peak torque with an additional 20 bhp and 200 Nm dished out by the electric motor.

The next in-line is G500d or G550 depending on the market. This version of the G-Wagon is powered by a 3.0-litre straight-six turbocharged petrol engine mated to the same 48V ISG. This petrol unit now makes 436 horses and 560 Nm of peak torque. The ISG provides an additional 20 hp and 200 Nm at slow speeds. Transmission duties on all variants of G-Wagon are carried out by a 9-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.

The AMG G63 remains top of the line and is powered by a 4.0L V8 bi-turbo petrol engine paired with a 48V ISG that dishes out a mammoth 568 bhp and 850 Nm of peak torque. It gets the same boost from the electric motor as the other two models. The highlight of this variant is its performance, which can clock a top speed of 220 kmph and can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in just 4.2 seconds.

2025 Mercedes Benz G-Wagon: Off-road capability

The G-Wagon’s legendary off-roading prowess stays intact with a 4×4 drivetrain, a low-range transfer case, and three mechanical differential locks offered as standard across the range. In addition, the DYNAMIC SELECT drive program lets the driver select from three off-road modes— Trail, Rock, and Sand. It boasts of a towering ground clearance of 229mm, a wading depth of 700mm, a 31-degree angle of approach, a 30-degree departure angle, and the ability to remain stable on inclines of up to 35 degrees.

2025 Mercedes Benz G-Wagon: New features

The updated G-Wagon gets a new touchscreen infotainment display and a larger 12.3-inch driver instrument panel embedded with the latest MBUX system. Other noteworthy enhancements include an MBUX rear-seat entertainment setup, Apple CarPlay or wireless Android Auto connectivity, 64-colour ambient lighting, a Burmester 3D sound system, and 20 new voice commands among other features.
