RiderTua.com – Maybe Mercedes-Benz is now known for its line-up of electric cars in Indonesia in its EQ series. It’s true that only a few models are sold here, but that alone is enough to meet demand in the market. Actually, Mercedes-Benz has the opportunity to sell other types of environmentally friendly cars. In fact, they once sold hybrid cars here, but they didn’t sell well.

Mercedes-Benz Once Sold Cars Other than BEVs in Indonesia

The EQ line-up sold in Indonesia has been enough to help Mercedes-Benz sales so far, both overall and for sales of environmentally friendly cars. Moreover, the electric car market is still wide open for them to continue to present more of their newest and flagship models on the global market. Even though only dozens of units have been sold, these results are already quite good.

Even though it is known for its electric cars, Mercedes-Benz has actually sold hybrid cars in Indonesia. To be precise, the plug-in hybrid car (PHEV) called the E300 e EQ Power, was first launched in 2019. This sedan model relies on a 2,000 cc turbocharged petrol engine and hybrid technology, so it can produce combined power and torque of 333 hp and 790 Nm.

Lack of Demand in Its Market

Since its release, many have highlighted its fuel efficiency, where the E300 e EQ Power only consumes 1.8 liters/100 km. While the top speed can reach 250 km/h, acceleration from 0-100 km/h can be achieved in 5.7 seconds. When it was first released, this model was sold for IDR 1.9 billion.

However, due to lack of demand in the luxury car market, Mercedes-Benz decided to switch to electric cars. This is why they present many EQ series models, while almost no hybrid or PHEV models are sold. The premium car market is not like the entry level car market, where electric cars are much sought after by consumers.

But at least Mercedes-Benz has tried to sell other types of cars. Especially with the PHEV model which is still rarely found in Indonesia.
