2 dead following fatal multi-vehicle crash in Baldwin Hills

The Los Angeles Police Department says two people are dead following a three-car crash in Baldwin Hills.

Authorities say the crash occurred just before 3 p.m. Saturday, when a Mercedes Benz carrying two passengers was speeding northbound on La Brea Avenue and Coliseum Street and lost control.

LAPD says the speeding vehicle hit another car that was waiting to turn left onto Coliseum Street, which caused the Benz to flip over. The Mercedes then impacted another nearby car before landing on its roof.

Both people in the Mercedes were pronounced dead at the scene. LAPD says the victims are an adult male and an adult female, who are both African-American. No further details have been provided.

The occupants of the other two vehicles suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Asst. Watch Commander Clarence Perkins of the LAPD says the section of northbound La Brea Avenue where the crash occurred is dangerous because it’s a downhill road and many drivers speed through the area.

“People tend to come down here faster than normal,” Perkins said. “A lot of times, we actually shoot laser here to slow them down, but when we’re not here, they speed down the street.”

Video obtained by KTLA shows the Mercedes laying on its roof, with canopies on each side. One of the other vehicles involved — a blue Honda sedan — had significant damage to the rear driver’s side. The third vehicle — a black BMW sedan — was damaged on multiple fronts.

It has been a deadly weekend on the roads in Southern California. Two teenage siblings were killed in a single-vehicle accident in Rancho Cucamonga on Friday. In a separate incident, a man was killed on the 101 Freeway near Oxnard after being struck by multiple vehicles.
