The White House Gave Tesla the Cold Shoulder

Merry Christmas, TorqueNews.com readers!

Life has never really been fair for Tesla. It’s been an uphill battle against all odds to compete against the more than a century old technology of the internal combustion engine, unions, and even the U.S. Presidency itself. Fortunately, Tesla is a very efficient and productive company and doesn’t need White House support.

Recently, Elon Musk sent out a Tweet that said:

Let’s not forget the White House giving Tesla the cold shoulder, excluding us from the EV summit and crediting GM with “leading the electric car revolution” in the same quarter that they delivered 26 electric cars (not a typo) and Tesla delivered 300 thousand.

Elon Musk certainly seems to be under fire constantly – from short sellers and those critical of Tesla and Elon’s Tweets. Supposedly, Federal Agencies are going after Elon Musk for a variety of reasons, including his small glass house.

They even cancelled an $885 million dollar contract with Starlink, which doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, considering Starlink is the best option for rural Internet service and is difficult to take down.

Many are critical of Elon Musk, and when someone has reached the position he has, this is going to be a natural occurrence. You cannot lead multiple disruptive companies like him while saying whatever you want and not have people become critical of you.

What Was the Reason The White House Snubbed Tesla?

I think the reason the White House has generally snubbed Tesla is because the President is largely in favor with and supportive – and supported by the unions of the legacy automakers making gasoline cars.

It all comes down to incentive. If the President gets votes by supporting unions, as well as money, then it behooves him to generally not mention or be supportive of something that is in opposition to this – Tesla.

Instead, his incentive is to support Unions and those car companies that have them, like GM, thus the President will say that GM lead the electric car revolution even though they produced 26 EVs compared to Tesla’s 300,000.

The good news for Tesla is that even though they are fighting an uphill battle, they still don’t need any funding from the U.S. government and due to the technology cost decline curves, EVs will easily overtake gasoline cars by the time the compact car reaches volume production and the end of the decade arrives.

The ICE car is dead, with little innovation over the last 50 years, and the EV, which as an exponential technology curve with batteries, CPUs, and software, including autonomous driving, is going to take its place.

Some day, there will likely come a new technology that makes the EV look like the dying gasoline car today, but I am not sure what that technology is or when it will arrive.
