Nathan C. White, 26, a microscope field-service engineer living in Livermore, Calif., on his 1989 BMW 635CSi, as told to A.J. Baime.

In the seventh grade, I wanted a project car. I hadn’t taken physics yet, and I believed I could invent the perpetual-motion machine. My mom told me if I could find a very affordable junk car, I could buy it. But she didn’t want something ugly in the driveway. So I started looking for beautiful cars.
