As years go by, a vehicle may attain a timeless appeal or lose its charm. To keep sales coming, automakers may update or refresh their models in the middle of their life cycle. They may also create special edition models, in which distinct features may reignite the vehicle’s desirability.

Volvo, one of the veterans in the auto industry, knows this so well. This is why its American arm is adding a Black Edition variant to its XC60 SUV.

Volvo Cars USA considers the XC60 as one of its best-selling SUVs. For the 2024 model year, the XC60 will boast some changes aimed at making the SUV more appealing to its target customers.

Another of the more meaningful changes for the 2024 XC60 is the availability of the Black Edition model. This new special model builds on the top-spec Ultimate equipment level, making it among the best-equipped XC60 with a dark twist.

The XC60 Black Edition brings the SUV to the dark side, both inside and out. On the exterior, the XC60 Black Edition comes wrapped in the stealthy Onyx Black finish. Stylishly complementing this finish are numerous exclusive black elements, such as a glossy black logo and grille. The XC60 Black Edition rides on 21-inch 5-Double Spoke High Gloss Black Alloy wheels.

Inside, the XC60 Black Edition features a charcoal interior with a black headliner. Its hyper-intelligent interior has two available premium seat upholstery options: Charcoal Ventilated Nappa Leather and Nappa Leather/Leatherette/Textile Sport Seats.

The cabin also features a contrasting metal mesh aluminum decor, and a crystal gear shift knob by Orrefors, as well as a 12.3-inch Digital Driver Display complete with Google built-in.

Changes to the 2024 XC60 also cover the powertrain choices. The best-value family SUV will drop its B6 powertrain and all front-wheel-drive B5 models. The XC60 B5 mild hybrid will be available only with AWD and will sit alongside the more powerful Recharge plug-in hybrid model as the only two power options. These choices apply to the Black Edition.

The XC60 B5 AWD Black Edition will employ the automaker’s mild hybrid technology that makes use of an internal combustion engine and an electric integrated starter generator. This version offers 295 hp of max output and 310 lb-ft of peak torque.

On the other hand, the 2024 XC60 Recharge Black Edition T8 will have Volvo’s plug-in hybrid powertrain. This drive pairs a 312-hp four-cylinder turbocharged engine with a 143-hp electric motor for a total system output of 455 hp. 523 lb-ft of torque is available from the Recharge model.

Volvo will soon open the order for the XC60 Black Edition, with deliveries starting in early 2024. The XC60 B5 AWD Ultimate Black Edition and XC60 T8 Recharge Ultimate Black Edition will have starting MSRPs of $57,500 and $68,950, respectively.
