BMW is bolstering its local X7 line-up by introducing a new entry-level petrol variant – the X7 xDrive 40i.

BMW is making its flagship seven-seat SUV more affordable with the introduction of a new six-cylinder petrol-powered xDrive 40i variant, due in Australia before the end of 2023.

The new variant – priced from $167,900 plus on-road costs – is $7000 cheaper than the previous most affordable model, the X7 xDrive 40d diesel.

But it is still $1000 more expensive than the X7 xDrive 40d was when the updated model arrived in showrooms last year – and is $48,000 more than the cheapest BMW X7 from four years ago.

The BMW X7 range has typically been comprised of two models: the diesel-powered xDrive 40d, priced from $174,900 before on-road costs (ORCs), or the performance-leaning X7 M60i which topped out at $205,900 before ORCs.

Pricing now kicks off from $167,900 before ORCs for the xDrive 40i variant which utilises a 3.0-litre inline-six-cylinder engine also offered with the smaller X5 and X6 SUV twins.

The engine features 48-volt mild-hybrid technology designed to recuperate lost energy during braking. The car also uses an eight-speed automatic transmission and an xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

BMW quotes a fuel efficiency of 9.6-10.6 litres per 100km, depending on options selected.

Outputs for the new engine total 280kW and 520Nm – though that latter figure is boosted to 540Nm with input from the 48-volt mild-hybrid system under hard acceleration.

Standard equipment is said to mirror that of the X7 xDrive 40d, meaning it will receive the M Sport package, metallic paint, BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery, a hands-free automatic split tailgate, a Harman Kardon 16-speaker sound system, a panoramic glass sunroof, and illuminated front grille.

Buyers can choose to bypass the M Sport styling package for a Design Pure Excellence theme at no extra cost, with different bumpers, wheels, and trim.
