U.S. auto brands Ram, GMC, and Dodge took the top three spots in a new study that analyzed the latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to find which car brands are safest on American roads.

The study by Ohio personal injury lawyers The Fitch Law Firm showed Ram coming out on top.

GMC placed second and Dodge finished third. The conclusions were based on how many times each brand was involved in an accident where at least one person suffered fatal injuries, and each auto’s percentage of passenger deaths.

The study showed that 18.9 percent, or 233, of the 1,234 people involved in fatal accidents of the Ram pickup truck brand suffered fatal injuries, more than 10 percentage points lower than any other brand. Ram was formed in 2010 as a spin-off from Dodge.

Coming in second place is the General Motors Co. truck and utility vehicle brand GMC. From the latest data, 837 of the 2,730 people in 2021 travelling in a GMC died when involved in a fatal accident, a percentage of 30.8 percent. The GMC Sierra is the brand’s best-selling model currently in the U.S.

Taking third place on the list is Dodge. In 2021, 3,808 people were involved in Dodge accidents where someone died, with 1,232, or 32.7 percent, of people in Dodge cars suffering fatal injuries. The Dodge Charger is the most sold model by the brand.

Fourth place goes to Jeep. The study found there to be 2,589 people traveling in a Jeep in 2021 who were involved in a fatal accident, and 874, or 34.1 percent of these victims, were in the Jeep. Sales numbers show that the Grand Cherokee has been the brand’s best-seller for quite some time.

Rounding out the top five is Acura. There were 708 deaths from accidents involving an Acura in 2021, and 239 of these victims were traveling in an Acura, a percentage of 34.2 percent. The MDX and RDX have been the company’s top-selling models.

According to the Fitch the safest brands driving on American roads are:

  1. Ram
  2. GMC
  3. Dodge
  4. Jeep
  5. Acura
  6. BMW
  7. Mercedes-Benz
  8. Cadillac
  9. Infiniti
  10. Ford

The study noted that “it may be good news to some to see this list full of historically American brands, particularly because these are official stats,” The report further states “many of these brands specialize in larger vehicles, that while they may be bigger on fuel consumption, statistically can offer safer experiences on the road.”
