2024 Cadillac CT5, CT5-V: Boldly Marching Toward Oblivion

It’s a rough time to be a sedan, and doubly rough if you happen to be a sedan with a gas engine. Gas-powered Cadillac sedan? Buddy, the outlook is grim: Car buyers have been flocking away from sedans for years, the age of electrification is upon us, and Cadillac expects to sell only electric vehicles by the end of the decade. That’s not a light at the end of the tunnel, it’s a meteor — and it’s headed straight at cars like the Cadillac CT5. The CT5 and CT5-V enter the 2024 model year with a few minor changes and a new starting price of $39,790 (all prices include a $1,395 delivery fee).

The CT5 gets a new paint color called Midnight Sky Metallic, a hazy purple, which probably isn’t meant to mark the twilight years of the model. V-Series models get their own fresh color choices, along with subtle 20th anniversary badging and a unique start-up animation in the instrument cluster.

After going extra stealth since its debut, the CT5-V Blackwing, which packs a V-8 under the hood but is indistinguishable from the regular V, finally comes from the factory with a little Blackwing tab below its V badging. GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous hands-free driving system is now available on the Blackwing, but only with the automatic transmission.

Performance

The regular CT5 comes with a 237-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine; a 335-hp, twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 is available on the Premium Luxury trim. In the CT5-V, the turbo six-cylinder is turned up to 360 hp. All are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is available. The Blackwing gets a 668-hp, supercharged 6.2-liter V-8, is rear-drive only and offers a standard six-speed manual transmission; the 10-speed automatic adds $3,175.

Plenty of Trim Level Options

The base CT5 Luxury trim is only available with the 2.0-liter engine. It includes 18-inch wheels, LED lighting front and rear, dual-zone climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, keyless entry, remote start, 12-way driver and 10-way power-adjustable front seats, a manual tilting and telescoping steering column, a nine-speaker audio system, a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless smartphone charging.

Standard safety equipment on the CT5 includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, blind spot monitors, lane departure steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert and Cadillac’s Safety Alert Seat that vibrates different areas of the bottom cushion to alert the driver of hazards to the left, right or straight ahead.

The Premium Luxury trim is available with either the 2.0-liter four or twin-turbo six. Its standard equipment includes perforated leather upholstery, 14-way power-adjustable front seats, a power tilt and telescoping steering column, ambient interior lighting, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, and reverse automatic braking.

Moving up to the Sport variant gets 19-inch wheels, black exterior trim, unique taillight lenses, a trunk-mounted spoiler, synthetic leather, 18-way front seats with adjustable thigh cushions and side bolsters, a beefier steering wheel wrapped in leather, paddle shifters and metal pedals.

In addition to the twin-turbo V-6 and the Sport trim’s equipment, the V adds a sport suspension with adaptive dampers, Brembo front brakes with four-piston calipers, an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential, quad-outlet exhaust and 15-speaker Bose sound system.

The Blackwing routes its power through high-performance summer tires on dark-finish 19-inch wheels. It comes with a stiffer suspension, a differential cooler, and larger Brembo brakes with six-piston calipers up front and four-piston ones out back. A line-lock function uses the front brakes to hold the vehicle in place while the driver does a burnout for better drag-strip traction (in theory; in reality, it’ll more likely be used to amuse friends and annoy neighbors). Inside, the Blackwing has leather upholstery with heated and ventilated front seats with massage functionality, a heated steering wheel, navigation, a 12-inch reconfigurable digital instrument panel, a head-up display, a 16-speaker AKG audio system and a 360-degree camera.
