When Toyota announced it would be discontinuing the Land Cruiser in the U.S. after the 2021 model year, there was no indication from the company that it had any intention of resurrecting the nameplate. But now, just three years later (which, to be fair, were three long years), Toyota is not so subtly hinting at the Land Cruiser’s return.

The company today released the above photo of what is obviously a first-generation Land Cruiser silhouetted nose to nose with a new vehicle along with the headline, “Legend Reborn: All-New Toyota Rugged SUV Is on the Horizon.” Toyota’s press release states only the following:

“With 65 years of heritage, you can choose to slow down or reinvent yourself. We chose the latter. Stay tuned for more updates.”

That’s it, the entirety of what Toyota has to say officially on the matter. But it’s sufficient. “Legend,” “Rugged SUV,” “65 years of heritage”: These aren’t clues any more than a stop sign is a clue. They’re clear statements. Steve from “Blue’s Clues” could piece these together before he could walk. The Toyota Land Cruiser will be back, and soon: Automotive News reports that the full reveal could take place as soon as August.
