Investigators with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office say car thieves have upped their game recently and are stealing keys from valet boxes.In a news conference, Lt. Paul Volkerson with the Orange County Sheriff’s office explained how they do it. “Some of the thefts are valet stands, where they left their key box unlocked so they were able to go up to the unlocked key box, take the keys and drive cars out of the lot,” Lt. Paul Volkerson said. “In one case, the valet actually left the keys in the vehicle. And one of the other ones they went and pried opened the box.”Investigators don’t know if it’s a ring or if thieves are working independently..What they do know is they have been quite busy. In the last month, investigators say thieves have stolen a Bentley from an amusement park on International Drive and lifted a Mercedes from an establishment in Winter Park.They also drove off with two cars, an Audi and a Ford Expedition, from a hotel near Disney, according to investigators. Next, they ventured into the Dr. Phillips area to a restaurant, took a Rolls Royce valued at close to half a million and took a BMW, investigators say. Thieves have stolen a Bentley, Mercedes, Audi, Ford Expedition, Rolls Royce and a BMW with a combined value totaling close to a million dollars. Investigators say two people have been arrested: a boyfriend and girlfriend who teamed up. Two cars have been recovered. Volkerson said the thieves have an original M.O. “I can’t remember in recent history any thefts similar to this where they have been targeting valet stands and the higher-end vehicles,” Volkerson said. So what can be done? Investigators say establishments need to do a better job of securing key boxes and that people need to ask more questions about how they’re securing key. The final solution is to not valet park your car.
