Launched back in 2019, the Tesla Model Y has been a model without competition for quite a while. But things have changed lately, and we get to see more and more compact luxury electric crossovers every day. One of these new models is the 2024 Blazer EV, a model that we can argue is superior in many ways to Model Y, ultimately making it a better buy. There are of course many ways in which the Model Y still remains superior, but are those enough reasons to buy it instead of the Chevrolet Blazer EV?

1 The Blazer EV SS Is More Powerful Than The Model Y Performance

Chevy didn’t reveal the final specs for all four Blazer EV trims but did announce power figures for the SS trim, and it looks promising. Placed on top of the lineup, the Blazer EV SS features an exclusive performance all-wheel-drive system that will deliver up to 557 horsepower and 648 pound-feet of torque. However, these figures will be available when the driver has the optional Wide Open Watts (WOW) mode on. By comparison, the most powerful Model Y – the Performance trim – features a dual-motor setup that delivers a combined 455 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque. However, although the Blazer EV SS is the most powerful model, in terms of 0 to 60 mph sprint time, it is the Model Y Performance that takes the win. It does the sprint in only 3.5 seconds, while the SS needs “less than four seconds,” according to Chevy.

2 They Deliver Almost The Same Range

Everyone knows that it is very difficult to beat Tesla in terms of range, but the Chevrolet Blazer EV comes very close. Although we have no output figures for most of the lineup, Chevy announced the range figures for all four trims. In the 1LT configuration, the 2024 Blazer EV has a range of 247 miles, the 2LT goes up to 293 miles, while the RS goes even higher to 329 miles. The SS trim is a little bit less efficient at only 290 miles, but that’s understandable since it is mostly focused on performance. The Model Y is a little bit better in all three trims. In the base configuration it has a range of 279 miles, the Long Range goes up to 330 miles, while the Performance is rated at 303 miles.

3 The Model Y Charges Faster Than The Blazer EV

The new Blazer EV also benefits from fast charging capabilities. As standard, all four trims come with an 11.5 kW onboard AC charging module for home and public charging, while the RS and the SS trims also get an optional high-speed DC public fast-charging capability of up to 190 kW. When using the 190-kW charger, the Blazer EV adds up to 78 miles of range in just 10 minutes and has access to the Ultium Charge 360 – GM’s EV charging network with more than 100,000 stations available across the U.S. and Canada. But no matter how promising these numbers are, the Model Y has it a lot better. Like all the other Tesla models, it has access to the Tesla Supercharger network system that adds up to 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes.

4 The Model Y Only Comes As An AWD Model, While The Blazer EV Can Be Had As FWD, RWD or AWD

The 2024 Blazer EV is built on GM’s highly advanced Ultium Platform that has a lot of cool benefits you will probably never get in any other electric vehicle. For example, all three Model Y trims come in an all-wheel-drive configuration, but the Blazer EV can be had with all three available driving systems: front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, and rear-wheel drive. The 1LT trim – which will be the least powerful one – will only be offered as an FWD model. Next in line, the 2LT can either be had as an FWD or an AWD model, and it should offer a little bit more power than the 1LT. The RS will be the only model that can be had in all three configurations: FWD, RWD, or AWD, while the SS will only be offered in an all-wheel-drive configuration.

5 The Blazer EV Features A Sportier Exterior Look

While the Model Y may take the lead when it comes to range or charging speeds, it surely loses a lot in terms of exterior design. It was launched back in 2019, but it features the same exterior look we have seen in all Tesla models for years. The Model Y features a coupe-like shape, with a tall roof and muscular lines, but there is nothing that screams wow about it. The 2024 Blazer EV, on the other hand, has a very aggressive exterior look, with design exterior elements inspired by Chevy’s high-performance cars. The front end is a combination of design elements inspired by the Camaro muscle cars and older race cars. The Blazer EV also has exterior features you will get on more expensive GM models like the Cadillac Lyriq. For example, in all models, the front lights increase speed and intensity as the battery’s charge increases, while for the RS and SS trims the lights activate when the driver approaches the SUV.

6 The Blazer EV Is More Compact, With Less Interior Space

The two cars are almost identical in exterior dimensions, but the Blazer EV is a little bit more compact. It was built on a 112.7-inch wheelbase and measures 183.1 inches in length, 76.7 inches in width, and 67 inches in height. By comparison, the Model Y was built on a 113.8-inch wheelbase and measures 187 inches in length, 83.8 inches in width, and 64 inches in height. Being a little bit more compact means the Blazer EV offers a little bit less interior space. The front headroom is 39.8 inches, while the rear one is 38.6 inches. In terms of legroom, the Blazer EV has 41 inches up front and 39.6 inches in the back. In the Model Y, the front headroom is 41 inches, and the rear one is 39.4 inches, while the legroom is 41.8 inches up front and 40.5 inches in the back. However, these numbers modify if you opt for seven seats in the Model Y.

7 The Model Y Offers More Cargo Space

The Tesla Model Y also takes the win in terms of cargo space. The Model Y with five seats has 30.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 72.1 cubic feet with the seats folded. The model with seven seats has 12.8 cubic feet of space behind the third row, 26.6 cubic feet behind the second row, and 67.9 cubic feet with all rear seats folded. The Model Y also has a frunk that adds another 4.1 cubic feet of storage space. The 2024 Chevy Blazer EV has a cargo space of 30.5 cubic feet with the seats up and 64.2 cubic feet with the seats folded. Chevy’s EV does not have a frunk.

8 The Blazer EV Has A Sportier, More Luxurious Interior

The Model Y also features a rather boring interior design, with a simple dashboard dominated by a large, 15.0-inch infotainment touchscreen that controls almost every EV feature. All models are also offered with an all-glass roof that creates the impression of a larger, airy ambiance. On the other hand, the Blazer EV features a more luxurious cabin, with elements inspired by Chevrolet’s sports cars and performance heritage. It is offered as standard with a 17.7-inch infotainment system that acts like the command center for the EV, plus a large 11-inch instrument cluster that displays information on the Blazer’s speed, power, and remaining range.

9 Both Models Are Loaded With Tech Features

Both the Model Y and the Blazer EV offer features like regenerative braking or one-pedal driving, but next to this, both are packed with lots of other cool options. For example, the Blazer EV is equipped with Super Cruise driver assistance technology that allows the owners to drive hands-free. A similar feature is also offered in the Model Y. For the latter, customers can choose between Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving Capability. The same goes for safety: both models offer an abundance of features that make both models very safe to drive. All four Blazer EV models come as standard with the Chevrolet Safety Assist features, while the Model Y offers automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature, and more.

10 The Two Models Are Equally Priced

Currently, the Model Y comes in three trims: base, Long Range, and Performance. The 2023 Tesla Model Y price starts from $47,490 for the entry-level model, from $50,490 for the Long Range, and from $54,490 for the Performance trim. The Blazer EV, on the other hand, will go on sale in the summer of 2023, with the first two trims available being the 2LT and the RS. The 2024 Chevy Blazer EV price will start from $47,595 for the 2LT and $51,995 for the RS. The Blazer EV SS will go on sale later in 2023 at a price of $65,995. Currently, the two electric SUVs are almost identical in price, once the Blazer EV 1LT will go on sale in 2024, the Chevy EV will have a small advantage. The 1LT trim will be priced at $44,995.
