The third-generation Toyota Tacoma lumbered along for nine years as the top dog in the mid-size pickup truck category. But renewed competition from General Motors, Ford, and Nissan meant Toyota couldn’t rest on its laurels. The result is the all-new fourth-generation 2024 Toyota Tacoma, which we’ve just learned the details of from our friends over at Tacoma4G in a leaked press release.

“Taco” lovers can rejoice that this truck still has what the automaker calls “Tacoma-ness,” meaning an athletic stance, slim body, and high lift. But purists may balk at what’s under the hood (or rather, what’s absent). Power for the 2024 Toyota Tacoma comes solely from a pair of four-cylinder engines. The stalwart V6 is extinct.

The timing for the 2024 Toyota Tacoma couldn’t be better. GM already has the all-new third-generation Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon hitting dealers now, and the Blue Oval recently released details about the redesigned 2024 Ford Ranger. Even the tired Nissan Frontier got a total re-do for the 2022 model year.

Four-Cylinder Power For The 2024 Toyota Tacoma

Following a trend that the company has used recently with the Highlander crossover, Toyota is ditching thirsty V-6 engines for smaller (four-cylinder) powerplants with turbochargers for extra grunt. And borrowing a page from the 2023 Toyota Tundra playbook, the automaker relies on hybrid technology for the most powerful version. However, the Tundra lost V8 power in favor of V6 options in the engine bay.

All 2024 Tacomas will get a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine but in different flavors (just like the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado). The powerplant for the base SR trim makes 228 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque, while higher trims will come with an engine producing 278 ponies and 317 lb-ft of torque. Both powerplants have a new eight-speed automatic. The V6 in last year’s Tacoma made 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft.

However, those who prefer to grind their own gears will appreciate that the 2024 Tacoma is available with a six-speed manual. It’s paired with an engine variant producing 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft. At the peak of 2024 Tacoma power is the i-FORCE MAX engine teamed with a 48-hp electric motor. The combination delivers a punchy 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft.

The PreRunner Returns To The Toyota Tacoma Lineup

The fourth-generation Tacoma comes in the usual trims: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD-Pro. But Toyota is reintroducing a throwback, the Tacoma TRD PreRunner; a two-wheel-drive-only truck with off-road capabilities. Meanwhile, the new Trailhunter edition offers an upscale take on overlanding.

Lower trims are available in two-door XtraCab or four-door Double Cab configurations. The TRD PreRunner is strictly an XtraCab affair, and the higher variants are Double Cab only. A six-foot cargo bed is now standard with the XtraCab and Double Cab buyers can choose a five- or six-foot bed. Maximum towing capacity is 6,500 pounds.
