Nearly 1 Million GM SUVs Recalled for Exploding Airbags

The culprit for GM’s latest major recall involves a serious defect affecting nearly 995,000 SUVs: exploding airbags. The issue is remarkably similar to the ongoing Takata airbag crisis.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2014-17 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia SUVs. Due to a manufacturing defect, the driver’s side airbag inflator, manufactured by ARC Automotive, may rupture upon deployment and cause metal fragments to enter the cabin, which increases the risk of injury and death of vehicle occupants.

To resolve the issue, dealers will replace the driver’s airbag module for free.
