There’s quite some hype around the 2024 Toyota Tacoma, which does build upon the reputation of reliability and durability of its predecessors. This could, however, mean the end of the V6 for improved emissions. Is the wait really worth it? Who can vouch for any newly released vehicle generation to be devoid of quality flaws and guaranteed safe from recalls?
Buying a vehicle which has been in production for some time, thereby allowing manufacturers to fine-tune their offerings, could be a wise move. Furthermore, with the fan base the Tacoma has, there’ll surely be some waiting before delivery. Getting a brand new 2023 Toyota Tacoma is not an option either, as that model is based on the eight-year-old third generation.

10 2022 Ford Maverick – From $19,995
The Maverick is a new offering from Ford in the compact pickup truck segment, sharing its unibody chassis with the Escape and the Bronco Sport. It is manufactured in Ford’s Hermosillo Assembly in Mexico. The Maverick has a standard 4.5 feet bed, which is highly modular thanks to its Flexbed system. Two engines are available: the standard 2.5-liter hybrid engine and the optional 2-liter EcoBoost engine. The latter allows for an optional four-wheel drive configuration, useful for towing.
The base XL variant does come packed with the Ford Co-Pilot360 driver-assist technology, which basically monitors blind-spot, rear cross-traffic, lane-departure, lane-keeping, and driver distraction or fatigue. The Maverick is one of the most affordable pickups on the market and is worthy of consideration if most of the driving takes place on asphalted roads.
9 2023 Chevrolet Colorado – From $30,695
GM’s latest Chevy Colorado has this time been built without Isuzu’s partnership, on a body-on-frame chassis, in Wentzville, Missouri. Its off-road oriented variant, the ZR2, also happens to be the base of the GM Defense ISV Army Truck! The Colorado is available in two cab styles, extended and crew. The cargo bed measures 5 feet or 6 feet, depending on the selected configuration, and has a spray-on bed liner and a corner step in the rear bumper, easing access to the bed.
The engine on offer is a turbocharged 2.7-liter inline-four mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Colorado is also equipped with Teen Driver Technology, which allows parents to monitor their teenagers’ driving behavior.
8 2023 GMC Canyon – From $38,095
The GMC Canyon is built in Wentzville, Missouri, alongside the Chevy Colorado, with which it shares its body-on-frame chassis. It has the same cab and bed configurations as the Colorado, namely an extended cab and a crew cab, along with a five feet and six feet long cargo bed. The engine does not differ from its sibling, either, featuring the same turbocharged 2.7-liter inline-four coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Where the Canyon does differ, though, are in its top variants which enhance the luxury of the already comfortable basic cabin, and offer more gizmos to play with. For instance, the Canyon has the ProGrade Trailering System for easy towing, and includes a trailer brake controller, a trailer sway control system and a hitch guidance system.
7 2022 Nissan Frontier – From $29,370
The Nissan Frontier has been in production since 1997, making it the longest running midsize truck in the North American market. Its third generation debuted in 2022, with a marked new design, updated tech and a contemporary interior. It has a body-on-frame architecture and is assembled in Canton, Mississippi. Two cab styles are on offer: king cab and crew cab, which can seat up to five passengers.
The cargo bed is five feet or six feet in length, depending on selected configuration. Engines available are a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a 3.8-liter V6. These are coupled with a nine-speed automatic transmission and available as rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Standard advanced safety features packed on the Nissan Frontier include automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning, lane departure warning and rear cross traffic alert.
6 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz – From $25,700
The Santa Cruz is a new offering from Hyundai, based on the Tucson’s unibody chassis. The Santa Cruz has proved to be quite popular since its release, with 36,480 units sold in 2022. Its composite-molded bed is 4 feet with anchor points, and there is a retractable lockable hard tonneau cover that is factory-integrated and adjustable rails with tie-down cleats.
The base engine is a 2.5-liter four cylinder coupled to an eight-speed transmission. A turbocharged version is also available, with an eight-speed dual clutch system. The cabin is spacious and loaded with tech, which feels more like an SUV than a pickup. Even the handling feels like driving a Sonata with a bed!
5 2022 Rivian R1T – From $73,000
Rivian’s first production vehicle, the R1T, is an electric pickup truck capable of going from 0-60 mph in as quick as 3 seconds. It has a body-on-frame design, but unlike the Ford F-150 Lightning, its bed and cabin are all one piece. The R1T’s bed is 4.5 feet in length, along with a storage tunnel between the bed and the passenger compartment and a “frunk.”
The R1T charges fully in 14 hours from a 40 A charger, or from 20% to 80% in around half an hour from a Level 3 DC fast charger. It has a range per charge of approximately 314 miles on the Large battery and 400 miles on the Max battery. Rivian might be new, but having partnered with Mercedes for the production of utility vehicles testifies of its plans to become a major player in the market.
4 2023 Ram 1500 Limited Elite Edition – From $65,305
For those looking for luxury, the Elite Edition of the Ram 1500 Limited is worth considering. Colors to make one stand out include the diamond black crystal, maximum steel metallic and ivory white tri-coat pearl. It has a 60/40 reclining rear bench, a heated steering wheel and 12-way power adjustable front seats which are also heated/ventilated.
One will further be spoiled with the panoramic sunroof, the 12-inch touchscreen display and the 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. On the outside, what grabs attention are the 22-inch wheels and power-retractable running boards. The engine on offer is a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with eTorque mild hybrid assistance.
3 2022 Toyota Tundra – From $35,950
The Toyota Tundra has quite a reputation. From towing space shuttles in their mission to Mars to clocking over 1 million miles, the Tundra mesmerizes. Known for its durability and reliability, it outlasts many of its competitors. Two cabin configurations are available, CrewMax and Double Cab. The utilitarian essence here is clear, with three bed lengths on offer: a 6.5 feet standard bed, an 8.1 feet long bed and a 5.5 feet short bed. On the engine side, a 5.7-liter V8 or a 3.5-liter V6 can be chosen from.
These engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, in rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive configurations. The Tundra comes standard with Toyota’s Safety Sense, which orchestrates automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, among others.
2 2022 Chevrolet Silverado – From $31,500
The Chevrolet Silverado is manufactured in Indiana, Michigan, Oshawa and Mexico, and is offered as Regular Cab, Double Cab and Crew Cab. To respond to the needs of its potential buyers, the bed is offered in 5.8 feet, 6.6 feet and 8.2 feet. Engine choices here are a 4.3-liter V6, a 5.3-liter V8, a 6.2-liter V8 and a 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel engine, which can either be paired with a six-speed or ten-speed automatic transmission. Both rear-wheel and four-wheel drive variants are on offer.
The Silverado also features a unique power up-down tailgate, which can be operated from a button on the tailgate or from the key fob. It further boasts an advanced tailoring system that includes 15 camera views, including the view from behind the trailer.
1 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning – From $59,974
Based on the F-150, the Lightning by Ford is the first all-electric pickup truck from a major automaker. It has a range of 230 miles on a single charge, and an optional extended range battery that delivers up to 300 miles.
The Lightning goes from 0-60 mph in under 4 seconds! It can be charged to 80% at public DC fast charging stations in about half an hour, or 8 hours from 15-100% using the 80 A Ford Charge Station Pro. This electric pickup only comes with a 5.5 feet bed, but does have a frunk for additional storage. The Lightning also comes with a built-in generator that can power a house or job site in case of an outage.
