It’s the stuff (sweet) dreams are made of.

A bubbly, five-year-old girl from Richmond Hill is one of nine Canadian winners in the 2023 Toyota Dream Car Art Contest, an annual event where children compete to design a “dream car” to help make the world a better place.

Phoebe Zhang paid tribute to her favourite food, candy, by making a giant pink candy shop on wheels, complete with a washroom, service person, chocolates and lollipop flowers. In her dream, the mobile candy shop comes to wherever you are.

“I made it because I like eating candies, any type, but not bubble gum because I might swallow it,” said Phoebe, adamantly. “I made it so children don’t have to walk to streets to buy it or sometimes you might get lost.”

The Zhangs moved to Richmond Hill from Burlington three years ago. They began noticing their daughter’s love for art from a young age through her scribbles and sketches.

“She is very passionate about drawing and used all the A4 paper in our home to draw,” said Yue Dong, Phoebe’s mother. “She made her own book of drawings, so we looked for an art teacher.”

Phoebe attends art class once a week, along with drama and coding class. Her art teacher told Phoebe’s parents about the contest and they were “shocked” when they found out she won. Phoebe felt a mixture of emotions.

“I feel proud and nervous, and embarrassed because I have to let everyone see it,” she said.
