The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on April 17 that car exports from South Korea hit an all-time high of US$6.518 billion last month, up 64.1 percent from a year ago, and the Q1 exports totaled US$17.099 billion, up 44.1 percent.

Last month, the export volume was 262,341 cars, up 48 percent year on year and the highest level since December 2016. This was led by green car exports, which topped 70,000 cars for the first time in history. Specifically, the volume and value increased 79.5 percent and 94.7 percent year on year to 71,781 and US$2.27 billion, respectively.

Hyundai Motor Company’s exports increased 31.6 percent to 99,139 and Kia’s increased 49.1 percent to 105,748. GM Korea, KG Mobility, and Renault Korea increased their exports by 85.6 percent, 34.9 percent, and 118.4 percent, respectively.

Last month, South Korea’s automobile production volume was 409,806, up 35.6 percent from a year earlier. The figure topped 400,000 in six years. Hyundai and Kia increased their outputs by 33.6 percent and 34.1 percent, respectively. GM Korea and KG Mobility recorded 63.9 percent and 65.8 percent, respectively. The domestic sales volume increased 19.6 percent year on year to 165,851.
