Niles police are investigating a reported vehicle theft from a gas station in the 5900 block of Touhy Avenue late in the morning of April 11.

The subject of the investigation is a tall, thin man in a light-colored hoodie sweatshirt whom police believe arrived at the gas station in a silver Lexus SUV, according to a department statement.

The two occupants of the vehicle, a 2016 BMW sedan registered in Illinois, were standing outside the car when it was taken, police said. Police said one of the victims tried to reach into the driver’s side of the vehicle to stop the subject from taking it, but fell as the car was driving away. The victim refused treatment from emergency workers at the scene of the incident, police said, and the car was last seen traveling eastbound on Touhy Avenue.

Police said no weapons were displayed or used during the theft and do not believe there is a sustained threat to public safety.
