Toyota has just dropped the first official teaser of the upcoming next-gen Tacoma. It is undoubtedly among one of the hottest anticipated launches of this year. Toyota is revising its truck and SUV line-up with fresh models. With the next-gen versions of the full-sized Tundra and Sequoia already out, it’s about time the carmaker’s mid-sized offerings get their due upgrades too. Though we might have to wait some more for the new 4Runner to arrive, we’ll likely see Toyota debuting the renewed Tacoma this year.
It’ll come as a 2024 model and get a bunch of upgrades across the board. Expect to see new powertrains, better off-road capability, improved driving dynamics, and a plusher cabin with more tech. Though Toyota is yet to reveal specific details about the 2024 Tacoma, it’s safe to say that the revised version of this mid-size pickup will be a game-changer in its segment.
Toyota’s latest teaser does a great job of hiding the new Taco. So Hotcar’s digital artist Rostislav Prokop has created a stunning rendering of what a new-age Tacoma might look like.
A Hybrid Powertrain Will Vastly Improve 2024 Tacoma’s Efficiency
Tacoma’s engine line-up will likely see a big change with the 2024 update. It currently offers a base four-cylinder with 159 hp and a 278 hp V6, making 265 lb-ft of torque. Toyota will probably drop the existing four-pot and the naturally-aspirated V6 in favor of a new set of motors. It’ll be a welcome change as these two mils have now started showing their age, especially compared to what Tacoma’s peers offer.
We hope the new Tacoma gets to keep a manual transmission option. But we’d be happy to see the current 6-speed automatic go. The 2023 Tundra will highly influence the next-gen Tacoma. So we may see the mid-size pickup getting the same 10-speed auto as its full-sized sibling.
The two trucks will also share powertrain options. The 2024 Tacoma will feature some electrification, and Tundra’s new hybrid V6 motor perfectly fits the bill. The setup produces 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque in the full-sized pickup with the help of an electric motor that’s integrated into the 10-speed automatic. The new Taco could utilize a version of this hybrid powertrain which will help boost its fuel economy.
Tacoma’s current efficiency ratings are dismal. EPA rates its 4WD version at 20 mpg on the highway and 17 mpg in the city, with a combined rating of 18 mpg. The hybrid setup in the new Tundra vastly improved its efficiency ratings compared to its older model. Expect similar results with the Tacoma too.
2024 Tacoma EV Will Be In A League Of Its Own
A hybrid powertrain with better fuel economy will slingshot Tacoma to the modern age. But to future-proof this mid-size pickup, Toyota would need to give it an electric version too. The carmaker did showcase the Tacoma EV concept a while back, but there aren’t any official details yet. Toyota has been sluggish in introducing all-electric models. The bZ4X is the only EV in its line-up in North America.
When the Tacoma EV arrives, it’ll likely be in a league of its own. At the moment, there aren’t any mid-size pickups that offer an electric powertrain. So there is a massive opportunity for Toyota to cash in on that. A fully-electric Tacoma will likely get a dual-motor setup in its most aggressive version. At the same time, base versions could also make do with a single-motor setup.
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Will Be The Most Rugged Yet
The Tacoma TRD Pro has been the go-to choice for buyers wanting a rugged and reliable pickup for off-roading. It comes from the factory with beefier shocks, gnarly tires, and underbody protection. These stock upgrades make it the ideal vehicle to tackle rough back roads and forest trails. While the suspension setup of the current-gen TRD Pro makes the Tacoma a champion off-the-tarmac, the leaf springs at the back mean that driving it on the paved road is not that enjoyable.
That’s likely to change with the 2024 update. As we saw on the Tundra, the new Tacoma TRD Pro will also get coilovers at the back for improved performance on the street. But it wouldn’t mean it’ll cut back on its off-road capability. Instead, the next-gen Tacoma TRD Pro will still get plenty of upgrades over the standard version of this truck, making it the most rugged version yet.
Redesigned Next-Gen Tacoma Cabin Will Be A Massive Upgrade
There is no information yet on what the interior of the new Toyota Tacoma will look like. But it’ll likely have much in common with the Tundra’s cabin. This would mean a snazzier layout, better materials, and improved tech. Both trucks will share the same TNGA-F platform, so expect the new Taco to get a roomier cabin. We hope Toyota improves the ergonomics of the crew cab version, especially for the back row.
The 2024 Tacoma will drop the current 8-inch infotainment system in favor of a larger screen, preferably the 14-inch unit of the Tundra. Higher models could also get a fully-digital instrument panel and surround-view camera for improved trail driving abilities. Apple Car Play and Android Auto will be standard fitments. We also expect to see the new Tacoma with better driver assistance features.
