The emergence of ChatGPT as a new-generation AI assistant is taking the world by storm. It is only a matter of time before this new AI tool makes its presence felt in the automotive industry. GM wants to be the first to take notice of this new tool. In a recent media interaction reported by Reuters, GM’s vice president indicated that ChatGPT might make its way into many GM SUVs and trucks planned in the coming years.

This announcement can be the next move in GM’s association with Microsoft, which happens to be a prime investor in ChatGPT’s parent company, OpenAI. General Motors hasn’t revealed when the integration of ChatGPT will happen in its future vehicles. However, it has hinted that its AI assistant will behave slightly differently than ChatGPT. GM will only use some of the OpenAI models using ChatGPT for answering unpredictable but viable solutions.

GM Plans To Offer ChatGPT-Based Features In Its Vehicles

In one of his recent interviews, the vice president at General Motors, Scott Miller, stated that ‘ChatGPT will be in everything’. Miller said this regarding all vehicles to roll out from GM’s production facilities in the future. Miller added that the features of ChatGPT can be used for accessing or understanding various functions of a vehicle, for which people have to explore the pages of its owner’s manual.

In another interview, a GM spokesperson said that the switch to ChatGPT-based AI assistant might make future GM vehicles smarter and fresher on the lines of emerging car technologies. With this, ChatGPT can operate many other functions in a GM SUV or truck and is not just an evolution of currently-used voice commands.

In 2021, General Motors joined hands with Microsoft to accelerate its intent of making driverless vehicles under its self-driving subsidiary ‘Cruise’. GM has been using Microsoft’s Azure platform to develop autonomous vehicles. Under this alliance, both GM and Microsoft intend to create a safe and hassle-free motoring experience by using the best of their engineering and manufacturing excellence.

Microsoft has already invested billions in OpenAI, ChatGPT’s parent company, and will be integrating functions and features of ChatGPT in its products, if not all. Considering this approach, GM can have an advantage over other carmakers in integrating ChatGPT in its vehicles, using the benefits of its alliance with Microsoft.

Miller has confirmed that GM is developing a ChatGPT-based AI assistant. However, he hasn’t cleared the air over the functions performed by this new highly-intelligent system. However, he has hinted that this new AI assistant will perform more unthinkable operations, which are more complex than the current functions operable by current-in-use voice commands.

Modern vehicles come equipped with a host of functions, and most of these assistant-based functions are complex to operate. Based on voice commands, this new ChatGPT-based AI assistant can understand the functionality and gain information on all the features. Not only this, but this advanced assistant can also be helpful in the detection of a possible fault in a car at any given point in time. In addition to detecting the problem, the assistant can provide solutions to rectify that problem.

Let us give you an example. Suppose you are driving a GM SUV, and a diagnostic light appears in its instrument cluster. You have no idea why the light popped up all of a sudden. However, there might be a chance that this assistant will give you the reason behind the emergence of this problem. This assistant can also provide solutions to rectify that warning light through a possible video demonstration of the rectification process on the infotainment screen or a feature-rich instrument cluster.

Use Of ChatGPT In GM SUVs Can Lead To A Revolution

The sudden spike in popularity of ChatGPT and artificial intelligence is being considered a revolution in many industries, including automotive. Microsoft is already working aggressively to integrate more technologies in vehicles, and the latest functions embedded in the infotainment systems in cars are proof of that.

While GM has hinted at using ChatGPT for its SUVs and trucks, its traditional rival Ford is also developing an advanced assistant for performing more functions than before. Apart from OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, other tech giants are competing to be better than others. Google and Apple have already made infotainment systems advanced with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay systems. Google has already taken the game to the next level with its ‘Assistant’ used in new-generation GM cars.

AI in cars sounds like a good idea at first, but there’s an even deeper picture to the whole scenario. Some tech giants, including Apple and Sony, have already entered into developing their electric vehicles. It will be interesting to see how traditional carmakers see this fresh challenge from tech companies in their own game. It will be interesting to see whether they will evolve with time and have an advantage over tech giants or end up as hardware suppliers to these new players.
