Car makers will stop soon stop manufacturing 17 popular car models such as Toyota Innova Crysta, Honda City 4th Gen and 5th gen diesel, Hyundai i20 diesel, Skoda Octavia, and Superb as the stricter Real Driving Emission (RDE) norms kick in from April 2023.
Also, models that have reached the end of their life cycle and those that didn’t sell enough will also be discontinued by manufacturers in 2020. Cars such as Maruti Alto 800, Renault Kwid 800 and Honda Amaze are also in the line of fire.

The new emission norms, which are part of phase 2 of the BS6 emission norms, require vehicles to have an onboard self-diagnostics device to monitor pollutants such as NOx emitted from a car in real-world driving conditions.

The new norms require carmakers to update the existing technology in engines to further reduce emissions. Updating the existing technology, especially in diesel engines, will prove expensive for car makers, who instead will prefer phasing out the models built on old technology. For example, models such as Honda City and Hyundai i20 diesel have a smaller capacity oil burner, which is expensive to update to match the new norms. Such smaller capacity diesel engines use cost-effective LNT (Lean NOx Trap) technology to comply with the current rules; however the same will need to be replaced with more expensive Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) tech to be road-ready once the new norms come into effect.

Deterred by reduced demand for diesel hatchbacks and sedans and the increased cost of deploying the SCR system, carmakers have decided to instead phase out the vehicles.

Other reasons for the discontinuation of car models

Other than RDE norms, car makers will also shelf models that have reached the end of their life cycle. These include Honda WR-V and Jazz. Some other models on the way out are the ones which failed to enthuse customers and sell enough models. These are Mahindra KUV100 and Marazzo.

List of all the models that manufacturers will stop producing in 2023

  • Hyundai Verna, i20 (Diesel)
