Tesla’s popularity in Australia has meant that order holders are waiting many months to get behind the wheel of their new electric vehicle. Now, it seems some right-hand drive order holders can pick a car from existing inventory, just not in Australia.

That’s the case in the UK where multiple Model 3 and Model Y EVs can be purchased and delivered almost immediately from existing stock.

What does this mean for markets like ours here in Australia where some order holders have been waiting since ordering their EV back in February?

Now in stock: Tesla Model 3 and Model Y

Tesla has been the best-selling EV in Australia for the last couple of years, by such a margin it has accounted for more than half of all sales. With EV popularity growing rapidly, Tesla’s EVs have become very hard to get for order holders.

In the UK though, stock of brand-new Tesla models has become available for people to purchase with immediate delivery.

These are right-hand drive EVs, just like the ones we receive here in Australia. They come from the same factory that supplies right-hand drive Australian Tesla deliveries.

It’s been over a year since any Model 3s appeared in Tesla’s inventory list here in Australia. Many order holders of the RWD variant have been waiting since February to receive their EV.

The Tesla Model 3 RWD is more expensive in the UK than in Australia. An example of a blue Tesla Model 3 RWD in stock is £51,090, which is equivalent to $89,590 AUD.

A similar Model 3 in Australia would be under $75,000 delivered in Victoria. That’s over $14,000 AUD more than what order holders will pay in the UK.

It’s not just the right-hand drive Tesla Model 3s that are in stock. The very popular Model Y SUVs are also available for immediate delivery too.

Some of the Model Ys in inventory even come with a tow hitch which is not an option currently available to Australian Tesla customers. These EVs are priced £4,190 more than the Model 3 inventory.

The delivery date is also much sooner and Model Ys can be delivered before Xmas for new orders.

Although Tesla’s inventory is available in some parts of the UK, it’s also worth noting that the markets are different. The Value-added Tax (VAT) is 20% of the value of the product when compared to the 10% GST we have here in Australia.

The cost of energy is also increasing at a rapid rate and finance is becoming harder to obtain for some order holders.

So what do some of these trends mean for local order holders?

Many ships on the way to Australia

Tesla Model 3 order holders who have been waiting for over 6 months to get their new EV delivered might have some relief on the way. VedaPrime who runs a Tesla tracking service for Australian and New Zealand order holders has revealed ships with Q4-built Teslas.

These are arriving for east and west coast order holders of the Model 3s from back in February along with more recent Model Y RWD orders.

Tesla Model Y Performance customers will have to wait a bit longer to receive their new EV which is more likely in the first few months of 2023.

Tesla is trying to catch up from previous quarters of lost time due to the Shanghai factory’s Covid-19 closures and plant upgrades.

All this activity around Tesla and EVs, in general, is just starting to gain momentum and with plenty more ships on the way, one thing is certain, the Tesla EV uptake will grow rapidly to close 2022.
