Keeping this notion alive, the BMW R 1250 R has been updated with several tweaks and new features, making it an even more compelling and sensible package than ever.


With the 2023 R 1250 R, BMW Motorrad is keeping the tradition of boxer twin engines which started with the 494cc R 32, which first came out almost a century ago in 1923. Unlike the usual liter-class flagship naked roadsters, which are all about hardcore performance, the new BMW R 1250 R tries to be more versatile with its balanced rideability even on usual commutes and touring. Even with all the changes and additions, the new 2023 BMW R 1250 R can be all yours for a base price of $14,995 – unchanged over its previous iteration.

The Underrated 1254cc Boxer-Twin Engine Of The BMW R 1250 R

Most of us are swooning over the astronomical performance numbers claimed by new-generation liter-class roadsters. But the BMW R 1250 R is one big-capacity naked roadster that makes us believe in taking things a bit easy. Opposed to the high-revving liter-class engines, which put up their maximum power and torque outputs at peaky RPMs, the BMW R 1250 R’s 1254cc, air/liquid-cooled, 2-cylinder boxer engine feels more usable with its widespread torque across the rpm range.

Paired with a 6-speed gearbox, this boxer twin engine of the BMW R 1250 R produces 136 hp of maximum power and 105 lb-ft of maximum torque. This engine comes equipped with BMW ShiftCam technology, as per which the intake valve timing and valve lift vary continuously. With this, the R 1250 R feels smoother and more fuel-efficient than ever. The power produced by this boxer twin engine is channeled to the rear wheel via a shaft drive – exclusive among the new-generation roadsters.

The New Standard Riding Aids In The New BMW R 1250 R

While the BMW R 1250 R takes an underrated approach in comparison to a mind-boggling, performance-oriented big-capacity naked roadster like the M 1000 R, it still is a new-age high-capacity motorcycle in terms of the rich equipment it offers. For the new 2023 iteration, BMW Motorrad is offering dynamic traction control (DTC), Integral ABS Pro, dynamic brake control (DBC), and three riding modes with a new ‘eco’ riding mode as part of the standard package.

In addition to the ‘rain’ and ‘road’ riding modes retained from the previous iteration of the R 1250 R, the new ‘eco’ riding mode uses a soft throttle curve and moderate engine torque limitation for a controlled performance at lower urban speeds. When the ‘eco’ riding mode is engaged, the instrument console shows an additional efficiency display.

To make the new R 1250 R even more desirable amidst the fresher-looking bunch of naked roadsters, BMW has now equipped with a few new-generation features which are now considered to be must-haves in motorcycles of its price. In addition to the already available 12V charging outlet, the new BMW R 1250 R also gets a USB-A socket with a 5V power supply.

The most noteworthy new inclusion in the BMW R 1250 R is the all-LED illumination for the motorcycle, consisting of the new full-LED headlamp and LED turn indicators, apart from the already available LED tail lamp. It can also be specced with optional adaptive turning light, in which the headlamp comes with additional LED elements, which have their reflectors and activate from an inclined position of 7 degrees to 25 degrees.

Another crucial add-on in the new BMW R 1250 R is the full-TFT colored instrument console, which features customizable screen displays for various modes and purposes. These modes include the ‘Sport’ core screen, in which the rider gets information about the current and maximum lean angle and activation of ABS Pro and dynamic traction control. As with modern, high-end display units, this new screen also features integrated arrow navigation and Bluetooth connectivity options.

The Optional Features and Design Highlights Of The New BMW R 1250 R

There are three new color options for the 2023 BMW R 1250 R – standard Ice Grey and optional Triple Black and Style Sport. The standard Ice Grey non-metallic color comes with a black frame. The other two optional color schemes – Triple Black and Style Sport – have more visual tweaks and add-ons.

The Triple Black version features a black storm metallic body color with an Agate Grey frame and features like stainless steel radiator grille and engine spoiler, and pure tank trim. On the other hand, the Style Sport version gets the Racing Blue Metallic color option with a white frame and features like black sports handlebars and a blue front spoiler. The Triple Black and Style Sport versions of the new R 1250 R also come with golden front and rear brake calipers and a solo rear cover for the pillion seat.

Other optional features in the new BMW R 1250 R are Option 719 spoke wheels, heated seats for rider and pillion, heated handlebar grips, gear shift assist pro, sport handlebars and windshield, lowered seat, and center stand. In addition to various ‘Option 719 Billet’ packages, there’s also a ‘Premium Package’ with add-ons like a keyless ride, design option rear muffler, chrome-plated exhaust manifold, heated grips, tire pressure monitor, and cruise control.
