Instead of the usual inline-6 cylinder in the BMW, it doubles its cylinder count with a massive 5.0-liter V12 to take on the S550 Mustang GT.
The Ford Mustang GT is no stranger to taking on competition at the drag strip. Whether it’s a C8 Chevrolet Corvette that wants some action, or a supercharged Dodge Charger ready to do battle, the S550 Ford Mustang is willing to take on whoever.
Although American muscle cars usually are the ones making the challenge, every once and a while there is a unique competitor that puts up a good fight. With that in mind, The YouTube channel Drag Car 4K brings the heat again with a 1/4 mile drag race between an S550 Ford Mustang GT with a 5.0-liter and a BMW E36 3-Series with a 5.0-liter V12 swap.
The Ford Mustang GT And E36 BMW 3-Series
While the two contenders appear to be worlds apart, they have a few similarities. First, they both feature engines with a displacement of 5.0 liters. The Ford Mustang has a coyote V8 engine standard in the GT models, while the BMW has an engine from one of its siblings.
BMW made a 5.0-liter V12 in the BMW 750i and 850i models known as the M70. This powerplant made 295 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. Essentially, this engine is two 2.5-liter BMW inline 6-cylinder engines to form a 5.0-liter V12.
On the other hand, the Ford Mustang has around 460 hp depending on the year. Both cars send power to the rear wheels only. Although we don’t know the transmission choices in either car, we can assume they are both manual gearboxes.
The BMW is down on power compared to the Mustang but it does have a massive weight advantage over the modern muscle car. A standard BMW E36 325i sedan weighs in at 2,932 lbs while an S550 Ford Mustang GT coupe tips the scales at 3,730 lbs.
The Race Results
As the 2 cars line up, the BMW does an impressive burnout highlighting its massive power and torque. A listen to the exhaust note produces a great-sounding V12 snarl, while the Mustang GT has the classic American V8 grunt.
It appears that the BMW gets a better launch on take-off, but the Mustang’s power and torque seem to give the pony car an advantage. The Mustang wins the race with a 13.280-second time at 107.8 mph. The BMW E36 is not far behind with a 13.724-second time at 103.8 mph.
The BMW made an impressive effort but it just wasn’t enough to take down the S550 Ford Mustang GT.
