The Porsche 911 GT3 is a lightweight rear-wheel-drive sports car from Germany boasting lots of power – the same is true for the BMW M4 CSL too, though, so which of these two cars is faster from a dig or from a roll?


Matt Watson and Carwow try to answer those questions in a new video posted on their YouTube Channel that shows a series of drag races between these two German sports cars.

On Paper, The BMW M4 CSL And Porsche 911 GT3 Are Evenly Matched

The BMW M4 CSL weighs just under 3,600 lbs. It gets it power from a 3.0-liter twin turbo inline six-cylinder engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission – total output of the powertrain is 550hp and 479 ft-lb of torque.

The Porsche 911 GT3 has a 4.0-liter flat-6 engine and a 7-speed dual clutch transmission combining for 510 hp and 346 ft-lb of torque; despite the lower power numbers, the Porsche has a significant weight advantage, as it hits the scales at a much lighter 3,163 lbs.

The Results From The Race Between The M4 CSL And The 911 GT3

In the race, the Porsche takes the early lead and crosses the 1/4-mile mark with a decisive lead. Matt Watson says that the BMW launches in 2nd gear, and even with the stability control shut off it still reduces power at launch in order to limit wheel spin.

For the second race, the Porsche wins again as the BMW suffers from even greater problems with the traction control systems.

They engage in several more races, but the results are always the same; the M4 has a problem getting a good launch, while the 911’s rear engine layout gives it good traction off the line.

Then it is off to a set of roll races: the first one starts with both cars going 50 mph while the transmissions are in their sportiest automatic settings.

The BMW’s gearbox is slow to downshift at the start of the race and this allows the Porsche to take the lead, but the M4 closes the distance and barely loses at the finish line.

In the second rolling race, both cars are set in manual mode – this change in settings allows the BMW to get a better start as it walks away from the Porsche.

The two German coupes then come together for a final roll race: this one begins at 40 mph with each car in second gear – the 911 GT3’s driver misses a gear shift, and the BMW pulls away and wins.
