BMW from Ford and Mercedes-Benz – the finish order of the eighth race of the season in the DTM Classic Cup was identical with one from the Saturday race, but the winner was a different one: at the Ardennes roller-coaster of Spa-Francorchamps, Yannik Trautwein secured a hard-fought win.
With the BMW E36 320is from the Schnitzer Motorsport Classic team, the 23-year-old scored his second victory after the season opener at Lausitzring. After an entertaining duel with Trautwein, Ronny Scheer drove his Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 to second place like on Saturday while Dutchman Ko Koppejan again finished third with his Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5 Evo. As a result, the three brands BMW, Ford and Mercedes-Benz that made their mark on DTM at the end of the 1980s were again on the podium.
On Sunday, the 7.004 kilometres long Spa-Francorchamps Grand Prix track made it considerably easier for the drivers than in the rainy race on Saturday. The fun factor at the track with its 19 corners was bigger. In qualifying already, Trautwein, Scheer and Koppejan had secured the first three positions, followed by Saturday race winner Marc Hessel, who had taken over the BMW E30 320is from DTM legend Prince Leopold of Bavaria at the last minute.
From the start, there was an entertaining battle for the lead with Trautwein and Scheer swapping positions several times. On the opening metres, Scheer already worked his way past Trautwein, but the latter successfully countered on the outside line at the “La Source” hairpin, only to be overtaken again by Scheer in the run towards the legendary “Eau Rouge”.
At every part of the track, the driver from Dresden made full use of the more than 500 hp of his turbocharged Sierra Cosworth while Trautwein benefited from the suspension qualities of his former Super Touring BMW. This battle continued until the finish and Trautwein had to do everything to get past the Ford again on the outside at “Blanchimont” on the final lap and to secure the win from Scheer.
Koppejan had to defend his third place against Marc Hessel throughout the distance, but the former BMW Junior driver and the third-placed in the 1987 DTM standings didn’t find a way past and had to make do with fourth place on Sunday. Behind Audi driver Thomas Wandel (GER) in fifth, a BMW quintet with Moritz Horn (GER), Mark Verhaegh (NLD), René Ruch (SUI), Jürgen Adi Schumann (GER) and Reinier van Abbe (NLD) rounded out the top ten.
In the finale of the DTM Classic Cup with touring cars from 1984 to 2007, especially from DTM, to be held at Hockenheimring from 7 till 9 October, two-time DTM runner-up Olaf Manthey (GER) will be starting as the title favourite with the BMW 635 CSi.
