An 18-year-old driver was charged Monday in a hit-and-run crash that injured a child on Cape Cod earlier this month.Jakob Gifford, of Marstons Mills, Massachusetts, is accused in the Aug. 20 crash that injured an 8-year-old boy who was on a scooter, police said. Gifford was charged with leaving the scene of an accident after causing personal injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and withholding evidence from a criminal proceeding. Police identified Gifford from tips and surveillance video, officials said. They said Gifford admitted being the driver. During his arraignment Monday officials said that prior to the crash, Gifford had been trying to sell the vehicle. After the collision and on the same day, Gifford finalized the sale of the vehicle that was used during the alleged hit-and-run, officials said. Gifford was held on $2,500 bail. According to police, Gifford was driving south on Higgins Crowell Road between the side streets of Jaybird Lane and Abells Road when he struck and seriously injured the boy.Witnesses told police that the vehicle immediately accelerated after the crash and continued traveling south on Higgins Crowell Road in the direction of Route 28.Video footage and witness descriptions indicate that the suspect’s vehicle is a silver-colored, midsized Mercedes-Benz SUV with tinted windows. Yarmouth firefighters treated the boy for serious injuries and transported him to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, where he was then put on a medical helicopter and flown to a Boston hospital. The boy underwent surgery and is home recovering, police said.
