At its second ‘AI Day’ later this year, Tesla is expected to release “many cool updates” and showcase the Optimus robot that has been MIA since its announcement last year. In recent years, Tesla has been hosting annual events centered on specific sectors. One of the first such events was the Tesla Battery Day in 2020 that saw the company unveil its new 4680 battery cell. At that event, Tesla also announced plans to produce its own battery cells for the first time.
At the first AI Day last year, Tesla unveiled its Dojo supercomputer, which the company claimed was the fastest AI training machine in the world. However, what really caught the attention of the world was the so-called ‘Tesla Bot’ that has since been renamed to Optimus. It is a fully bipedal humanoid robot that Elon Musk said will be geared toward doing boring and repetitive tasks that most humans would not want to do. In fact, Musk even claimed that it will be able to solve future labor shortages.
Back in May, Elon Musk announced that the second Tesla AI Day will be held on Aug. 19, 2022 – exactly one year after the first AI Day was held in 2021. However, the date has since been pushed back to September 30th, with Musk announcing the delay via Twitter in June. Explaining the reasoning behind the delay, Musk said that Tesla will have a working prototype of the Optimus robot by late September, which is as good a hint as any that the bot will finally be unveiled at the event next month.

It is worth noting that at Tesla’s first AI Day last year, Musk said that a working prototype of the company’s humanoid robot will be ready by the end of 2022. If the company is able to showcase it at the upcoming event, it will mean that the company is able to meet its self-imposed deadline for once. Tesla is notorious for missing deadlines with most of its projects, including the Roadster and the Cybertruck, delayed multiple times due to one reason or another.
Musk has even said that Tesla hopes to start production of the Optimus robot next year alongside the Tesla Cybertruck. That is just as well, given other companies are catching up with their own bipedal humanoids. One such example is Chinese tech company Xiaomi, which recently showcased a working prototype of its CyberOne robot with human-like posture and balance. Of course, the Tesla Optimus humanoid is expected to be more advanced, with Musk recently claiming that in less than a decade, people might be gifting humanoid robots to their parents, presumably, to do household chores.
