Some things seemingly become an instant icon. In the auto industry, this usually means an exotic super or hyper car that has an eye-watering price tag. In terms of more mainstream cars, the icon status can frequently be attributed to the performance luxury midsize sedan market. One of the sedans in this segment that always seems to end up on the upper echelon is the BMW M5. It has been around for quite a while now and has only gotten better over time. Its icon status has been solidified over time with coveted powertrains like a 5.0-liter V10 and many more.

The newest M5 CS does not stray from its strong pedigree. It is an iconic super sedan through and through. But the term ‘super sedan’ does not come cheap. In the case of the M5 CS, it comes at a price tag of at least $144,000. With that being said, we still think it’s worth every dollar.

The 2022 M5 CS is pricey. But you get what you pay for. Here is why we believe that.

The BMW M5 CS: Bavarian Engineering At Its Finest

Putting reliability aside, the M5 has had some impressive powertrains over the years. They gave this midsize luxury sedan oodles of power that most often left the competition in the dust. The trend continues with the new M5 CS. “CS” is the term of the highest end M5 that you can currently buy. This gives you more of what makes the M5 a super sedan. This means a power boost from 600 horsepower to 627 horsepower from its 4.4-liter twin turbo V8. Aside from that, you get other performance benefits such as 230 pounds in weight reduction thanks to things like a carbon fiber hood and sportier tuning.

All of these impressive performance improvements start to really show when you start to drive the M5 CS. BMW has a claimed 0-60 mph for this version of the M5 at only 2.9 seconds and a top speed governed at a still high 190 miles per hour. Thinking of other competitors in this segment like the M5’s longtime rival, the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, it still has the edge given that it beats the Benz with overall horsepower.

The M5 CS Is The Happy Medium In BMW’s M Lineup

BMW has a ton of vehicles in their M lineup these days. Sometimes it is hard to keep them all straight. With how many sedans, coupes, and SUVs they offer in M guise, it can lead to some serious decision fatigue of what one is the one to go for. We can confidently say that the M5 CS is one of the best contenders in the current M lineup. The M versions of the larger 7 and 8 Series have big power but they themselves are a little large. The M3 has always been a popular choice, but its smaller size hampers some practicality, and its performance numbers are unfortunately not as absurd as the M5 CS. Also, we’ll take a sedan over an SUV any day when it comes to top tier performance.

This leaves us with the M5 CS. It is large enough to be accommodating for daily use but is not too unwieldy and still gives us wildly high-performance specs. If all of this is enough to convince you that the 2022 BMW M5 CS is for you, act fast. The M5 CS is only being offered for the 2022 model year, and we’re sure that you’re not the only who thinks it is worth every penny.
