The Intelligent Parking System Will Help You Avoid Traffic Violations
General Motors has decided to use the resources allocated for a regular park assist feature, and club the other features of a car to work together to provide a much more seamless experience. The intelligent parking system will use the GPS and Internet to find an empty parking spot in the vicinity of the vehicle with the parking restriction information. This technology, with its sensors, will also alert the driver if he/she parks the car in a no parking zone. After validating a spot as a legal parking zone, the advanced park assist will work with the sensors and cameras on both the ends to either park the car autonomously or semi-autonomously.
If a car does not have the advance park assist technology, the intelligent parking system will use GPS and communicate with the DIC (Driver Information Center) to inform the driver if it is safe to park in a particular spot or not. This technology might also be extended to make parking payment transactions using a touchscreen in your car or a smartphone. This technology is one of those features that we would like to see sometime soon. This is important because most of the autonomous vehicles can park themselves without any human intervention, but it is limited to keeping enough distances from the sides of the road and other cars. With this technology, the fully autonomous cars will become much more ‘self-sufficient’ in terms of taking right decisions by checking with the regulatory authority about the legality of a place where it wants to park itself.
According to the patent filing by General Motors, “The patent describes an intelligent park assist system that uses onboard sensors and connected technology to determine if an available parking space is either valid or invalid. The system leverages visual cameras, radar, GPS, and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication to gather information on relevant parking restrictions, including parking signs, fire hydrants, and the like. The system also integrates with advanced park assist systems (both autonomous and semi-autonomous) to guide and park the vehicle in a valid parking spot.
If a user attempts to park in a spot that is determined to be invalid, the driver will be issued a warning via the driver information center. What’s more, the system can be used to automatically initiate a parking payment transaction, such as through the onboard navigation display, or through the user’s smartphone.”
The Intelligent Parking System Will Work Without The Automatic Park Assist Too
The intelligent parking system from General Motors will also work in cars without the park assist technology, or in cars where park assist has not been activated. In this mode, the intelligent parking system will just use GPS and connection services to find a valid parking area in the car’s vicinity, and the parking will be done by the driver manually. The information can be delivered to the driver either using the car’s infotainment display or a smartphone. The new technology will also alert the driver via his smartphone in case the timer of the parking meter has expired for a car. This is another positive step towards avoiding traffic violations for any driver with a car that is equipped with this technology.
In cars that have the automatic park assist technology, the experience becomes wholesome as the car does everything on its own without troubling the driver. The first bit of the job will be done by the intelligent parking system which will find a suitable parking spot considering the surrounding and the information available. The second half of the job will be done by the automatic park assist technology that will steer the car automatically into a parking space. The driver of the car will have to just follow easy-to-understand text commands, select gears, and do the braking and accelerating duties to make the most out of the space that is available to him/her.
