Toyota Goes Places

Toyota returns to the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show with a new, expanded display, the most showcase vehicles ever, a laser focus on the aftermarket industry, on- and off-road performance and adventure and new initiatives for off-the-grid explorers and those who love to accessorize their Toyota cars, trucks and SUVs.

Toyota’s new and larger SEMA Show space (Central Hall, Booth No. 22200) at the Las Vegas Convention Center symbolizes the brand’s continued and growing commitment to on- and off-road performance and adventure. And the variety of special builds on display sends a powerful message about Toyota’s devotion to consumers searching for excitement – whether travel, spirited track days or off-the-beaten path exploration where the journey is as important as the destination.

“At Toyota, ‘Let’s Go Places’ isn’t just a tagline. It’s a driving force behind everything we do,” said Lisa Materazzo, group vice president – Toyota Division Marketing. “Our cars, sports cars, trucks, SUVs and technologies not only help you get the most enjoyment from your vehicle, they also get you to the places and activities that bring joy.”

The SEMA Show presents the perfect location for Toyota to share its plan to connect even closer with adventurers and overlanding enthusiasts..

Toyota Trailhunter Concept

Toyota announced the new Trailhunter grade of trucks with the unveiling of the Trailhunter Concept at the 2022 Specialty Equipment Market Association Show (SEMA). Trailhunter will strengthen Toyota’s commitment to the overlanding community and take its legendary go-anywhere credentials to the next level. Toyota is planning to offer purpose-built trucks and SUVs under the Trailhunter name to outdoor enthusiasts who long for off-the-grid expeditions. Trailhunter will serve as a flagship offering to inspire and support modifications of Toyota trucks with Toyota Genuine or Associated Accessory Products equipment across the lineup.

“Trailhunter trucks will come straight from the factory equipped to meet the needs of overlanding enthusiasts,” said Lisa Materazzo, group vice president – Toyota Division Marketing. “These trucks will be developed in-house by our engineering teams and will be the most capable OEM overlanding solutions designed to meet Toyota’s legendary quality, durability and reliability standards.”

Building on Toyota’s proven trucks and SUVs, Trailhunter vehicles will be highly capable, intentionally designed overlanding rigs. The all-new Trailhunter product line is designed to meet the demands of outdoor enthusiasts who love to explore with their vehicle. Designed and developed in-house at Toyota, Trailhunter vehicles will be adventure ready straight from the factory, providing a trail-ready truck with components and accessories that support a remote off-the-grid experience.

The Trailhunter concept vehicle showcases Toyota’s vision of what this new grade of truck could look like right off the dealer lot including available Associated Accessory Products. The concept truck on display at the 2022 SEMA Show is equipped with a Trailhunter-specific suspension setup, skid plates, roof rack, bumpers, lighting, refrigerator, rooftop tent and more all engineered specifically for overlanding applications. Enthusiasts can expect future Trailhunter products to deliver terrain versatility and protection as well as load-bearing performance and storage functionality for their equipment, recovery gear and base camp necessities.

Year after year at the SEMA Show, Toyota has demonstrated its commitment to performance, excitement and fun. Toyota has shown its strong devotion to outdoor enthusiasts through overlanding concepts such as the Tacozilla Tacoma Camper, the TRD Sport Trailer and the Tacoma Overlanding Concept. Trailhunter will take that commitment to the next level.

Toyota will share additional Trailhunter details next year. Every truck will be designed from the ground up to include the overlanding modifications and components enthusiasts expect. The Trailhunter badge – which resembles a compass to reinforce that the journey is the main purpose – will represent the vehicle’s bona fide credentials as a highly functional and purpose-built overlanding rig.

Toyota is displaying an array of featured vehicles and build concepts along with a variety of production cars, SUVs and trucks in its SEMA Show exhibit (Central Hall, Booth No. 22200) at the Las Vegas Convention Center Nov. 1-4, 2022.

Vehicle described is a special project prototype vehicle, modified with parts and/or accessories not available from Toyota may void the vehicle’s warranty, may negatively impact vehicle performance and safety, and may not be street legal.

Toyota also announced its Associated Accessory Program (AAP), a new initiative giving consumers a more seamless way to accessorize their Toyota vehicles. AAP will offer parts, components and accessories from many of Toyota’s trusted partners, expanding Toyota’s already robust portfolio of Toyota-approved products and making it easier for customers to personalize and enhance their vehicles. A major benefit of the new program is the ability to roll in the accessories into the overall payment plan of the vehicle.

Toyota Special Builds

To many, SEMA is all about the show vehicles, and Toyota never fails to answer the call. This year Toyota brings 13 exciting special builds to the show floor, including:

The GR Corolla Rally Concept – From the Toyota Motorsports Garage team comes a GR Corolla like no other, a sports car oozing Toyota Gazoo Racing DNA and rocket fuel for those who love Toyota sports cars and rally performance.

The 10-Second Twins – The Toyota Motorsports Garage team wondered what they could do with the GR Supra, a drag strip and a $10,000 build budget. Answer: 10-second performers dubbed the “10-Second Twins” because what’s better than a 10-second GR Supra? Two 10-second GR Supras, doubling the adrenaline.

The GR86 Daily Drifter – Photographer Larry Chen envisioned a drift car that resonates with pro drifting fans and enthusiasts, creating a GR86 that resembles the purpose-built machines pro drivers like Fredric Aasbo, Ken Gushi and Ryan Tuerck drive in competition, yet focusing on what can be attainable with a manageable budget.

The2023 ‘Simba’ Sequoia by X Overland and 2022 ‘Orion’ Tundra by X Overland – Clay and Rachelle Croft established Expedition Overland in 2010. Today it is an award-winning team of adventure travelers sharing their explorations of some of the world’s most remote places through its popular “Expedition Overland” TV series, inspiring others to go on their own adventures. On display are the Crofts’ latest special project vehicles – the Simba Sequoia and Orion Tundra, both overlanding rigs that will serve as show production workhorses, carrying the team to distant locales as they continue to explore and share their adventures with loyal “Expedition Overland” fans worldwide.

The Sequoia TRD Pro Adventurer by Westcott Designs – Jeff and Jessica Westcott, co-founders of Westcott Designs, bring this eye-catching and trail-capable rig to the display to represent their company’s interest in engineering and manufacturing as well as their team’s keen attention to detail.

The Ultimate Overlanding Sequoia TRD Off-Road – Starting with a 2023 Toyota Sequoia Limited TRD Off-Road, the enthusiasts at 4WD Toyota Owner Media, publisher of “4WD Toyota Owner Magazine” and highly experienced off-road explorers, built a Sequoia that has the goods to back up its bold name.

The GR86 Cup Car and the GR Corolla Official NASA Pace Car – Toyota never fails to bring something to SEMA that showcases its focus on sports cars, performance and motorsports. Filling that role this year is the Toyota GR86 Cup Car, the dedicated steed for the all-new single make Toyota GR Cup racing series that debuts in 2023. And to add more spice, Toyota displays the GR Corolla Official NASA Pace Car, fresh from its duties pacing the 2022 National Auto Sport Association (NASA) National Championships at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca this past September.

The FJ49, Megatourer and Supertourer, aka the “Black Truck” – These three builds from Patriot Campers provide a look into Toyota overlanding and off-road adventure in the land down under. All the way from the Gold Coast, Queensland, area of Australia, Justin Montesalvo, director of Patriot Campers, brings the FJ49, a 1977 FJ45 with modern technologies and components: the Megatourer, a six-wheeled beast with aggressive looks and unparalleled capabilities; and the Supertourer that is both aggressively good looking and fully capable of off-the-grid journeys.

4WD Media

Joining Toyota at the 2022 SEMA Show, the experts at 4WD Toyota Owner Media, publisher of “4WD Toyota Owner Magazine,” are highly experienced off-road explorers. Starting with the already capable 2023 Toyota Sequoia Limited TRD Off-Road, the team set their compass and embarked on creating a supreme overlanding rig concept vehicle to showcase at the show.

The result is a build the team has dubbed “The Ultimate Overlanding Sequoia TRD Off-Road,” which is a rig that has the goods to back up its name.

On display in Toyota’s Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA)® Show exhibit (Central Hall, Booth No. 22200) at the Las Vegas Convention Center, the Sequoia joins a collection of special project vehicles celebrating performance and excitement, both on and off road.

“We’re honored to have the 4WD Toyota Owner Media team join us at SEMA this year,” said Lisa Materazzo, group vice president – Toyota Division Marketing. “With a new and larger display, it’s great to have their outstanding Sequoia build among our array of Toyota trucks, SUVs and sports cars, the most we’ve ever shown at this show.”

The 4WD Toyota Owner Media crew teamed up with the experts at CBI Offroad Fabrication in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to outfit the all-new Toyota Sequoia Limited with the TRD Off-Road package with some of the best trail-ready components to enhance Toyota’s all-new robust and reliable eight-passenger flagship full-size SUV.

To provide additional ground clearance and increase the Sequoia’s approach and departure angles, ToyTec® coilovers, shocks and coil springs on all four corners provide a three-inch lift. Camburg® KINETIK upper control arms and 6061-T6 billet aluminum rear trailing arms complete the set up. Next, the team added a set of bronze 706 Bead Grip Method Race Wheels® wrapped with LT285/75R17 (34.1 inch) Toyo® Open Country M/T tires.

CBI Offroad skid plates, rock sliders, front bumper and rear bumper with dual swingouts provide trail-traversing protection. When the going gets tough, a set of MaxTrax® MKII traction boards, a Warn® VR EVO 12-S winch, Warn winch recovery kit, Hi-Lift 48-inch jack, Power Tank® tire repair kit, Power Tank PT10 onboard air tank and a Power Tank Overlander 0-60 psi digital inflator help ensure the journey reaches the intended destination.

For nighttime visibility, the team added a 20-inch SR LED front bumper light bar, 4-inch front driving lights, SR-M flush mount rear bumper lights and 50-inch LED roof rack light bar all from Rigid Industries®. A Prinsu® roof rack provides gear-carrying capabilities, and for base camp there is an Autohome® Airlander Plus rooftop tent, a Dometic® CFX3 45-liter on-board refrigerator/freezer, Dometic GO storage bins and hydration jug, Rotopax® water and fuel storage containers, a sPOD® Bantam power distribution system and a Midland® MicroMobile MXT575 50W GMRS two-way radio.

Finally, Fast Signs® in Idaho Falls wrapped The Ultimate Overlanding Sequoia TRD Off-Road concept with an eye-catching black and bronze layout that complements the sleek look of the Sequoia while never taking away from the outstanding design of the vehicle behind the build.

LEXUS Builds Bigger

For the 2022 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, Lexus exhibits in a bigger, new space with six stellar vehicles showcasing the future of the brand. The four key pillars representing the driving force for the company include bold design, intuitive technology, electrification and the Lexus Driving Signature, and all facets are on display for the mecca of the aftermarket enthusiast.

DSPORT IS 600+ Project Build

It’s Serious. What started as an IS 350 F SPORT has evolved into the most aggressive performance-focused project car Lexus has displayed at SEMA. Testing at more than 600 horsepower (hence the name), this new flagship turbocharged engine derived from the parent brand’s Dynamic Force engine lineup allows this Lexus take F SPORT to a new level.

The sports sedan is powered by the thoroughly modern, all-aluminum V35A V6 engine featuring 3.5-liters of displacement fed by a pair of billet compressor wheel turbochargers. The engine combines both port and direct fuel injection as well as efficient breathing to help deliver superior response and consistent performance.  Liquid-to-air intercoolers are integrated into the compact package to help lower intake charge temperature and improve power. Sourced from the LS 500, this ultra-efficient engine with massaged CT28 turbos has been leveled up with  increased boost levels and recalibrated fuel and ignition curves to allow this IS to see over 600 horsepower on E85 fuel in a motorsports trim. To increase driver engagement, a Samsonas full-sequential 6-speed transmission is paddle shifted thanks to engine and transmission communication through the Emtron engine management system.

As this is a track-focused project, the chassis has been stiffened with the help of a custom 4-point roll cage and allows for the KW Double Adjustable coil overs to function optimally in keeping the massive Michelins in contact with the pavement. The RC F Carbon Ceramic brake package helps this IS shed speed as dramatically as it accumulates it. To achieve desired weight reduction, the rear seats were removed, and the hood and truck were replaced by Seibon carbon fiber units for the sole mission of speed.  The driver can monitor engine functions from a MoTeC Motorsports color dash display while seated and strapped into the Sparco seats and harnesses.

The sedan’s dramatic stance comes courtesy of the Artisan Spirits wide body kit and 19″ VOLK racing wheels. The body is sprayed with Axalta multi-stage custom paint in Lexus OEM hues.

A vision of the spiritual successor to the iconic LFA supercar, the Lexus Electrified Sport symbolizes the Next Chapter of Lexus. Unleashing the full potential of electrification to push all of the limits on both the road and the track, the Lexus Electrified Sport envisions a potential 0—60 mph time in the low two-second range and a cruising distance that could exceed 430 miles, thanks to the possible use of solid-state batteries. This two-passenger athletic coupe was designed at CALTY in Newport Beach, California.

ENEOS Major Presence

ENEOS, Japan’s largest oil company and supplier to the majority of Asian vehicle manufacturers, has a major presence at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, including a booth (# 23819) in Central Hall. Display vehicles showcase many ENEOS products, including its Racing Series motor oils, EV Fluid Line, transmission fluids, and more.

The newest ENEOS X Prime 0W-8 ultra-low viscosity oil highlights the company’s deep relationship with many of Asia’s car makers, which requested the special formulation to meet stringent emissions and economy standards. The X Prime 0W-8 synthetic oil is designed for the latest hybrid vehicles and will be supplied to manufacturers for factory fill requirements. It will also be available for dealer oil changes and DIY maintenance.

ENEOS PORSCHE 911 GT3 STI
Built by Faruk Kugay at DevSpeed Motorsports, ENEOS will display his 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 with Subaru Impreza STI EJ25 engine conversion. The ENEOS-lubricated STI engine has been upgraded to 550hp with a BorgWarner turbo, Vibrant intercooler and more. The Impreza’s six-speed transmission has been adapted to work with the rear-engined Porsche RWD layout.

VAD Design GT3R bodywork provided wider fenders to accommodate 19″ Rotiform 917 wheels and Toyo Proxes R888R tires. BC Racing coilovers keep the rubber planted, and the bodyshell was stiffened with a 3D-scanned, CNC-bent rollcage from CageKits.

The DevSpeed / ENEOS Porsche 911 GT3 STI has a unique livery inspired by the classic Salzburg Porsche 917 and Subaru’s World Rally Championship cars.

NISSAN FRONTIER RACE TRUCK
The 2006 Nissan Frontier Pre-Runner was built by R/T TUNING for racer Dai Yoshihara and fitted with the VR30DDTT motor from the latest Nissan Z. Originally 400hp, the Z now generates 600hp after being modified with an R/T Tuning V2 turbo kit and more. The high-performance VR30DDTT is lubricated with ENEOS motor oil to provide the optimum combination of protection and performance.

The Frontier pre-runner uses Bilstein coilovers, Eibach springs, and a CJD long-travel kit to deal with off-road racing. Yokohama Geolandar M/T tires are mounted to Weld Racing Cinch beadlock wheels that are accommodated by a FiberWerx Nissan Titan carbon fiber front-end conversion.

THERE’S MORE
Other vehicles presented by ENEOS at SEMA 2022 include the Evasive Motorsports Tesla Model 3 Pikes Peak race car, which was used as a testbed for the new ENEOS EV Fluid Line, designed to help increase efficiency and durability of electric vehicles. It is located in the SEMA Electrified area in North Hall.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, ENEOS is displaying a 1971 Datsun 521 Pickup outdoors and a 1997 Acura Integra Type R in the Pit & Paddock outdoor booth. Both capture the heritage of the Japanese oil company.

Dodge Meets the Charge with BEV

Dodge is showing performance enthusiasts future-product hints in the lead up to the launch of the world’s first electrified muscle car. The Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept will once again use a respected gathering of automotive builders and tuners to offer a peek at the future of the Dodge brand.

The November 1-4, 2022, Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, is the world’s largest automotive trade event and will host a 19,500-sq.-ft. Dodge display featuring the Banshee-powered battery-electric muscle car, as well as six “Last Call” 2023 Dodge Charger and Challenger special-edition performance cars and a full roster of new 6- and 8-cylinder Direct Connection crate engines.

“The SEMA Show is one of the great gatherings of the performance culture, and Dodge isn’t going to shy away as we develop the next generation of muscle car – one that just happens to be fully electric,” said Tim Kuniskis, Dodge brand chief executive officer – Stellantis. “Technology moves forward and the customizers and tuners move right along with it. We’re demonstrating how old-school hot-rodding will thrive in an electrified muscle-car future.”

The Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept, originally shown during Dodge Speed Week as part of the lead-up to the world’s largest celebration of automotive culture – Michigan’s Woodward Dream Cruise – will take center stage at the brand’s performance-focused SEMA display.

BEV Power and Performance Upgrades Previewed
Highlighting the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept’s SEMA visit is the announcement of nine possible powertrain outputs for the all-electric muscle car concept. Three different battery-electric power levels will be shown at SEMA, as well as two levels of Dodge Direct Connection performance upgrades for each power level.

Dodge is illustrating a stair-step approach to its electrified performance, with 400-volt system output levels of 340 kilowatts (456 hp) and 440 kilowatts (590 hp) and an as-yet-unannounced, factory-delivered, power-level 800-volt SRT Banshee powertrain package.

Direct Connection Stage 1 and Stage 2 performance upgrades use a “crystal” key that plugs into the dash. Base output and Direct Connection upgrade levels for the 800-volt Banshee will be announced at a future date.

Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept Stryker Red
The first thing a casual SEMA Show observer will notice is the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept’s new tri-coat Stryker Red exterior hue.

The new exterior paint color was chosen as a way to celebrate the Stage 2 Banshee performance upgrade. In addition, the concept features “Stage 2” fender badging and new 18-inch Direct Connection lightweight carbon-fiber concept wheels with 305mm drag radials.

Using a video display wall, Dodge will also show off a variety of Charger Daytona SRT Concept colors, wheel designs and performance configurations, illustrating the visual and performance customization that will continue to be a hallmark of Dodge muscle cars in the years to come.

The power levels are matched to a full slate of nine unique paint colors and nine different wheel combinations, and displayed via videos, illustrating the nine different performance and Direct Connection upgrade levels envisioned for the Dodge concept car.

Fine Tuning the Fratzog
Dodge will also conduct Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept car consumer clinics at the SEMA Show. On-site teams will engage attendees to survey their impressions in regard to the tuning of the patent-pending Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust – the world’s first BEV exhaust system.

Consumer feedback obtained from opinion leaders in the world of performance cars will aid the Dodge brand in its breakthrough work to create a one-of-a-kind sound signature for its upcoming fully electric Charger muscle car.

Research participants will be given an opportunity to evaluate and rank unique tuning versions of the Charger Daytona SRT Concept’s exhaust note.

Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept
The Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept represents a giant step forward on the performance brand’s road to an electrified future, offering a perception-shattering concept that reimagines what a muscle car can be. The Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept offers a glimpse at the brand’s electric future through a vehicle that drives like a Dodge, looks like a Dodge and sounds like Dodge.

At its core, the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept is an authentic Dodge with attitude, and it will redefine American muscle by combining the visual, visceral, and emotional experiences the Brotherhood demands into a pure, radical, high-performance muscle car for the next generation.

Dodge//SRT
For more than 100 years, the Dodge brand has carried on the spirit of brothers John and Horace Dodge. Their influence continues today as Dodge shifts into high gear with a lineup that delivers unrivaled performance in each of the segments where they compete.

Dodge drives forward as a pure performance brand, offering SRT Hellcat versions of the Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger and Dodge Durango, as well as an R/T plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of the all-new 2023 Dodge Hornet, representing the brand’s first-ever electrified performance vehicle. Dodge delivers the drag-strip dominating 807-horsepower Dodge Challenger SRT Super Stock; the 797-horsepower Dodge Charger SRT Redeye, the most powerful and fastest mass-produced sedan in the world; and the 710-horsepower Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat, the most powerful SUV ever; and best-in-class standard performance in the compact utility vehicle segment with the Dodge Hornet. Combined, these four muscle vehicles make Dodge the industry’s most powerful brand, offering more horsepower than any other American brand across its entire lineup.
