Over the years BMW has evolved their model lineup to such an extent that they cover pretty much every market segment imaginable, and nothing underlines their willingness to create a niche model more than the Gran Coupe.

As long as it isn’t a pickup, BMW has a luxury car they can sell to you. Such is their market presence. So, it isn’t by accident that you can buy a 4-door coupe (an oxymoron if there ever was one), it is very much by design and there are several reasons why one might opt for this instead of one of their other luxury sedans.

8 Sleek Coupe Design

The number one reason why anyone would choose this over a regular sedan is its design. It runs on the same platform as the sleek coupe/convertible, only with the added benefit of two extra doors.

Anyone with a family will understand this choice, and the length of the regular coupe means the 4-door version doesn’t look out of proportion at all. It might actually even look a little better…

7 A Normal (ish) Grill

Well, there are indeed a few outliers that actually desire to own a new BMW with a huge grill, but the fact that there is an aftermarket “solution” for that slack-jaw look suggests the vast majority prefer something more subtle.

Thankfully, the 8-series is thus far untouched, and we suspect it will stay that way until this model eventually dies an emissions related death.

6 Efficient V6 Model

Out of all the 8-series cars on offer the base model is arguably the one to have. It offers ample power for a car this size and is more efficient than some compact cars.

In city driving conditions the big 8 will net a solid 22 MPG and on the highway 29 MPG. Neither figure is spectacular, but when you take into account the fact that 60 mph will still come up in under 5 seconds, what BMW have done here is rather incredible.

5 Powerful Twin-Turbo V8 Option

If power is the only feature you are really interested in, then they will have you covered too, with a sumptuous 523 horsepower V8 powertrain.

If you opt for the more expensive M8, you will get 617 horsepower on tap. But that isn’t the best option in our opinion, and nor is the limited edition art car.

4 Alpina B8 Model

If you are willing to spend quite a lot extra, we wouldn’t necessarily recommend the Jeff Koons art car, rather the Alpina B8.

Nobody on the planet knows how to enhance BMW cars better than Alpina and when they put their name on a car it pretty much guarantees that car will firstly be the absolute best version of itself and that the car will hold its value. They go over the entire vehicle and add something extra to every area, what is interesting is the fact that they opted for their own tune for the V8 which makes 612 horsepower, 5 less than the M8.

3 Luxurious Interior

As you might expect with any high-end BMW, the inside of the car is a very nice place to be, but arguably the best part of it is how unfussed it is.

This is not a new for 2023 model, it has been around for some time now and avoids the gigantic infotainment screens that seem to be taking over the automotive industry. They have as a result escaped any risk of “tackiness,” but it is still far from perfect. iDrive has its quirks, but isn’t nearly as complicated as some other infotainment solutions.

2 Sedan Practicality

The low coupe roofline will limit the headroom for the rear occupants, but this is not a limousine, this is a car you need to drive.

It is a car that you can certainly justify owning if you have kids, yet will deliver sports car performance even in its most affordable guise. It is not a sports car, but won’t disappoint anyone looking for a GT car.

1 Four Door Grand Tourer

Easily the best part of this car is the fact that it really is a proper GT car with four doors. Although they certainly don’t need to make this particular model, it is hard not to love them for offering it.

It is a nod to the fact that there are still people out there that care about how a car looks and that they will be able to own a car that looks like a coupe, but offers the practicality of an average sedan.
