The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated a preliminary investigation concerning reports of brake assist loss affecting 3,322 GM Cadillac Lyriq electric vehicles. These reports describe instances where drivers experienced a firm brake pedal, accompanied by a “Brake System Failure” message upon startup or during operation. This assessment pertains to vehicles from the 2023 model year.
According to a preliminary evaluation report by the NHTSA, GM has attributed the issue to a fracture in the electronic brake control module’s internal spindle during anti-lock braking system (ABS) activation. ABS is crucial for preventing wheel lock and skidding, thus enhancing safety on the road.
As a result of the spindle fracture, affected vehicles may encounter a loss of brake assist, speed limitation, and reduced ABS functionality, as outlined in the NHTSA report by GM. To address this concern, GM has developed an over-the-air update designed to notify drivers in the event of spindle fracture, as stated by the NHTSA.
