X concept to preview BMW’s latest SUV design ethos and one of six advanced all-new electric cars

BMW has given us our first glimpse of the all-new BMW Vision Neue Klasse X concept, showing off a silhouette on social media channels overnight ahead of its reveal on March 21.

Said to preview an SUV that’s one of six all-new EVs based on BMW’s Neue Klasse electric car architecture, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse X concept is expected to closely resemble a production car that will arrive in late 2025.

Created to replace the current BMW iX3, the concept should match the current mid-size SUV’s dimensions, measuring in at around 4700mm long, 1900mm wide and standing at around 1700mm tall.

Beneath the skin, expect BMW’s latest all-electric powertrain tech that will see the flagship versions produce around 450kW.

As well as the advanced platform, the next iX3 benefits from BMW’s advanced sixth-generation lithium-ion cylindrical cells that are said to feature far superior liquid cooling.

The new batteries have a 56mm diameter but are available in two heights – either 95mm or 120mm.

The new cells have a higher nickel content, but lower cobalt, as well as anodes that have higher silicon content and a new graphite mix that boosts energy density by as much as 20 per cent.

Combined with an 800-volt electrical architecture, the new BMW EVs will be 30 per cent faster to recharge than its current cars, tolerating a fast DC charge at up to 350kW.

The driving range will also be boosted by a 25 per cent increase in efficiency due to lower weight, better aerodynamics and the more advanced powertrain.

Picking up where the striking BMW i3 sedan left off at the 2023 Munich motor show, the new iX3 (codenamed NA5) will be sold alongside petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid versions of the next-generation G45-series X3 that sits on an updated version of the current SUV’s CLAR platform.

The all-new BMW iX3 replacement will be available with single-motor/rear-wheel drive and dual-motor/all-wheel drive layouts.

Finally, new chassis tech that includes a ‘Heart of Joy’ ECU and complex software should ensure the next-gen all-electric SUV challenges the best in its class for its ride and drive.
