Mercedes-Benz Becomes The World’s First Car Manufacturer To Conduct X-ray Crash Test
German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz has shared that it has become the first car manufacturer in the world to have conducted an X-ray car crash test. The company has recently crash tested a C-Class where X-ray imaging is used. This technological demonstration by Mercedes-Benz was conducted in association with the Fraunhofer-Institute for High-Speed Dynamics.
Mercedes-Benz recently conducted the world’s first X-ray crash test at the EMI research crash facility in Freiburg, Germany. This test aimed to provide insights into internal deformation processes during crashes.
Paul Dick, Director of Vehicle Safety, Mercedes-Benz AG shared his view of the test, where he said, “The world’s first X-ray crash shows that X-ray technology can provide revealing new insights. We learn what happens inside a vehicle and to the dummies during an accident. The X-ray images also offer the opportunity to further improve the model quality of the digital prototypes”.
During the test, a device with a crash barrier traveling at 60 kmph collided with a C-Class. A linear accelerator, acting as an X-ray camera, captured the collision from above. This technology allows for precise visualization of deformation processes without motion blur.
The X-ray beams penetrate the vehicle and dummies, while a flat detector captures digital images in real-time. Around 100 still frames per impact provide insights into the forces at play within the vehicle and dummy anatomy.
Importantly, the integration of X-ray technology does not disrupt existing analysis tools or interior cameras. Strict radiation protection measures were implemented to ensure safety compliance. Mercedes-Benz’s initiative signifies a step forward in automotive safety testing methodologies.
Commenting on the occasion Markus Schafer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Chief Technology Officer said, “The Mercedes-Benz X-ray crash sets a milestone in the development tools of the future. With a direct view into the hidden interior, it can help to draw important conclusions for the further improvement of vehicle safety. Mercedes-Benz thus confirms its role as a safety pioneer in automotive engineering”.
