07. Audi Quattro – Ashes to Ashes

It helps if your TV car has its own catchphrase, and DCI Gene Hunt’s cry of “Fire up the Quattro!” in Ashes to Ashes did enough to cement the ’80s car in the audience’s affections. Best known as a rally car, the Quattro used in the show, set in 1981, is actually a red 1983 model, partly as the Quattro was only available in LHD in 1981. The TV car gets smashed up in the series finale, but the real thing is still safe and well in the BBC compound.

06. Jaguar E-Type 2+2 Series 111 1971 – Dalgliesh

In the original books by PD James, Chief Inspector Dalgliesh drove a Cooper Bristol, and later a Jaguar XJS. But in the current TV adaptation by Channel 5 starring Bertie Carvel as the poetic detective, he drives a lovely E-Type Jag, which only adds to his air of Byronic romanticism. Now, we’re not sure an honest copper in 1976 could have afforded an E-type, but remember Dalgliesh is a successful published poet, so maybe the books paid for it. It’s perfectly practical for Dalgliesh and his sidekick Miskin to zoom around in catching baddies, but he wouldn’t be able to put them on the back seat – this 2+2 version of the E-type does have a rear seat, but it’s only really big enough for a dog. The Jag is seen on the streets of ‘London’ and in the country lanes of ‘Norfolk’, but the series is actually filmed in Dublin.

05. Ferrari Testarossa – Miami Vice

If you think that linen suits, pastel T-shirts and loafers worn without socks are the height of fashion, and you could cruise all day to the sound of Jan Hammer, the Ferrari Testarossa used by undercover cop Sonny Crockett in Miami Vice, which ran from 1984-1990, would be only car for you.

Apparently Enzo Ferrari didn’t like the fact that the show was using replicas of his Daytona, so in the third season he donated two black Testarossas for the show to use instead. They were later repainted white, and one came up for sale in 2014 at £1.4m.
