After the success of Race Across the World, BBC One is now airing a celebrity version. Taking part is racing driver and sports presenter Billy Monger who will be travelling with his sister Bonny.

Billy is a racing driver who raced in British F4 in 2016 and 2017 and in 2017 was involved in a very serious car crash. In April 2017, when Billy was just 17, he was critically injured in a collision at Donington Park that resulted in both of his legs having to be amputated, one below and the other above the knee.

The 24-year-old nearly died in the crash and Billy now uses prosthetics on both his legs. After his crash, he was supported by many famous faces in Formula One including Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Daniel Ricciardo, Jolyon Palmer and Nico Hülkenberg.

Although many believed he would never race again Billy returned to the sport in November 2017 and in 2018 was awarded the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Helen Rollason Award for outstanding achievement in the face of adversity. Bill began competing in F3 and he and his family had to appeal to the sport’s international governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, to change their regulations, as they had restricted disabled drivers from racing single-seaters on the grounds of safety.

The FIA decided to lift the ban in December 2017, allowing disabled drivers to race appropriately-modified single seaters as long as they could pass safety checks. Since 2019 he has provided analysis for Channel 4 F1.

He has also commentated on W Series, an all-female single-seater racing championship, and worked on Channel 4’s Paralympic Games coverage and the Parasport presenting team, as commentator and reporter.
