With another year under wraps, the demand for used cars remains just as popular, if not more so, than new cars. In a study conducted by iSeeCars, there were over 9.2 million used car sales in the U.S. with model years between 2018 and 2022. Each model’s share of used car sales was calculated nationally, as well as within every metropolitan area and state.
Trucks Remain On Top
Based on the findings, there were some expected, and unexpected results. Pickup trucks are still very popular among Americans, with the Ford F-150 unsurprisingly remaining at the top spot on the list, retaining its title as America’s best-selling truck. Its arch-rival the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 trailed behind it in second place. But the Ram 1500, another big contender in the truck market, fell from its third-place spot in 2022 to fourth in 2023 behind the Chevrolet Equinox, which is the first time it has ever dropped in popularity in recent years.

Consumers Want More Affordable & Fuel Efficient Used Cars
“Trucks have been so dominant in the U.S. market for so long that it’s strange to see the Ram lose its top-three ranking, even to an SUV as popular as the Chevrolet Equinox,” says Karl Brauer, iSeeCars Executive Analyst. “This shift reflects the jump in gas prices during 2023, which led many consumers to move away from large trucks and SUVs and into smaller, more fuel-efficient models.”
Meanwhile, other vehicles like the Toyota Corolla saw some significant growth in popularity thanks to its affordability and fuel efficiency rising from the 13th spot to 8th. The Honda CR-V also grew more popular in 2023, rising from 15th place in 2022 to 11th place in 2023.
