From the beginning, automakers recognized the market for upscale luxury cars, with folks of wealth and renown snapping them up as status symbols. Clark Gable was probably the first Hollywood star with a famous car collection, including a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, a Packard Twin-Six convertible, and his beloved Duesenberg Model JN. As the luxury market moved into performance, celebrities like James Dean and Steve McQueen built famous sports car collections, though probably less as flaunting their wealth and more for their shared interest in racing.

Well, technically he was a Porsche fanatic, but as CNN reported in 2016, he sold 16 of his Porsches for $22 million, including $5.3 million for his 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder. No worries, as the comedian still has over 100 cars in his collection that stretch beyond German sports cars.

Then there are several rides in Shaq’s collection that seem like an imposibility that he actually fits in them. He called his 1961 Lincoln Continental, the “Dead Kennedy” after Bay Area punkers The Dead Kennedys. The 1956 Ford F100 is called “Str8 Edge” in a nod to hardcore pioneers Minor Threat, who started the Straight Edge scene.

Wrestling superstar turned actor, John Cena, would have the top celebrity car collection if it weren’t for Jay Leno, but there’s no shame in coming in second behind the Michael Jordan or Wayne Gretzky of auto hoarding. Hosting the Tonight Show for 20 years is enough of a legacy builder for most folks, but Jay Leno is now actually more famous for his insane car collection. With around 185 cars and over 180 motorcycles housed in his Burbank, California “Big Dog” garage, Leno can literally drive a different vehicle every day of the year and never repeat one. Due to sheer volume, it would probably be easier to list the rides that Leno doesn’t have, but then again, it’s hard to think of something he doesn’t own.
