Depending on where you live and drive, heated exterior mirrors could be just a nice-to-have feature for the few times a year they might be useful. But if you reside where snow and ice are a fact of winter life, heated mirrors are a safety feature, not a luxury. They’re also no longer a feature just for luxury cars — an increasing number of vehicles with sticker prices of $40,000 or less, some much less, offer heated mirrors.

Exterior mirrors that feature heating improve your visibility around the vehicle, which is even more important on a dark winter night. They also help you avoid scraping the mirror’s glass, damaging the increasingly tech-filled mirror pods and their adjustment mechanisms, and using chemical de-icers.

Like the rear window defroster/defogger, heated mirrors are electric and use heating elements that are embedded in the glass to melt snow and ice. In most new vehicles, the heated mirrors and rear window defroster/defogger are tied together in one system, and both turn on with the rear defroster switch rather than having a separate control for the mirrors. How long the system remains on can vary by vehicle, but generally, it’s about 10 to 15 minutes before it automatically shuts off.

Here are the 2023 and 2024 model-year vehicles that offer heated exterior mirrors as standard or optional equipment for a sticker price of $40,000 or less — including destination and any higher trim level or option package needed to get the heated mirrors. The 2023 list is complete, while the 2024 list includes only those vehicles for which 2024 U.S. specs have been officially announced; that list will grow through the year.
