Every year with the onset of winters in the Northern part of the country, numerous fog-related accidents are reported. Here is one from Ludhiana, which caused a pile-up of around 100 vehicles! This video shows the aftermath.

The accident happened in the early hours in Ludhiana on the national highway. According to the information, a crash caused a pile-up of over 100 cars. After the first accident, other vehicles driving on the same road could not apply brakes in time and stop their vehicles causing the massive pile-up.

The video shows numerous vehicles in close proximity that were part of the pile-up. You can see vehicles including Hyundai i10, Ford Figo, Toyota Innova, Mahindra Bolero, Tata Harrier, Maruti Dzire and more. All the vehicles seem to be damaged due to the crash but none of the passengers involved in the accident were not injured as it was a slow speed pile-up.

It might have taken a lot of time to clear the highway for normal traffic but one can avoid being a part of such pile-ups by following a few simple tips.

If possible, avoid going out in the fog. The poor visibility makes driving conditions very challenging and can lead to serious accidents.

• Avoid travelling if the fog is heavy. If you must drive in foggy conditions, opt for daytime travel. Fog has a stronger effect at night, with headlamp light reflecting back and potentially blinding the driver.
• Instead of using hazard lamps, which are meant for stationary vehicles, use fog lamps and low beam lamps if your car has them. These lamps positioned closer to the road provide better visibility in foggy conditions. Avoid using high beams as they can reflect back and blind you.
• Drive at a slower speed in foggy conditions. Limited visibility means you can’t see beyond a certain point, so reducing your speed allows for better reaction time in case of emergency braking.
• When driving in fog, follow lane markings to navigate the road. If there are no lane markings, follow the divider or the edge of the road to determine the road’s direction.
• If you need to park your car on the side of the road, make sure to park away from the tarmac and traffic. Use hazard lamps to indicate your stationary status, and if you’re inside the car, keep the headlights in low beam to ensure your brake lamps are visible.
