In a release, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut’s office said Zaiqwan Fothergill, 21, was sentenced Tuesday to 72 months of imprisonment followed by five years of supervised release for robbing a Hartford credit union last year.

On June 29, the U.S. attorney’s office said, Fothergill robbed the Cencap Federal Credit Union while armed with a .40-caliber ghost gun. It said he took $24,214 while his associate, 28-year-old Hakeem Robinson, stood watch in the credit union during the robbery.

The U.S. attorney’s office said Hartford police officers located and arrested Fothergill and Robinson in Keney Park in Hartford shortly after the robbery.

At the time of their arrest, Hartford police Lt. Aaron Boisvert said nobody was injured during the robbery and that police had recovered the bag of money and the gun.

A tracking device that was placed into one of the bags showed that the robbers were in Keney Park, Boisvert said, and the first officer to arrive saw two male suspects standing next to a car, looking into a bank bag. When the pair realized police were around, they ran into the woods, he said.

Officers went into the woods after them while others surrounded the area, Boisvert said. Police found the pair and took them into custody.

The U.S. attorney’s office said Fothergill pleaded guilty to armed bank robbery on Feb. 2, 2023, while Robinson pleaded guilty to the same charge and was sentenced to 56 months of prison on May 8.

Fothergill and Robinson have been detained since their arrests, the U.S. attorney’s office said.
