Toyota surely has one of the best SUV lineups in America that ranges from the best-selling RAV4 crossover to the midsize Highlander and the gigantic Sequoia. However, the gap between the Highlander and Sequoia was massive, and desperately needed a fix.

To fix this huge gap, Toyota launched the Grand Highlander this year. The Grand Highlander is special for some compelling reasons. It comes with powerful and efficient hybrid engines, features sharp styling, a premium cabin, and a long list of features. With Toyota recently announcing the news of the configurator going online, we decided to mess around with the configurator and build the costliest Grand Highlander yet.

There’s a bonus. We’ll also configure the 2023 Highlander and compare its costs with its deluxe sibling.

The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander comes in two variants: regular and hybrid. The Grand Highlander starts at $43,070 while the Grand Highlander Hybrid’s price kicks off at $44,670. On the other hand, the 2023 Highlander starts at $32,620 with the hybrid starting at $40,620.

A Fully Optioned 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Costs $65,764

Since the 2024 Grand Highlander offers a handful of accessories for customization, the price after customization would be an interesting find. To build the costliest Grand Highlander, we’re basing this build on the Hybrid Max Platinum which costs $58,125.

Powertrain, Exterior, And Interior Color Options

This trim brings only one powertrain combination. The 2.4-liter Hybrid Max inline-four engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and AWD system.

The Grand Highlander offers seven exterior colors, among which the Ruby Flare Pearl and Wind Chill Pearl cost $425. The interior offers three color schemes, all of which are no-cost upgrades.

Time For Some Accessories

Although Toyota doesn’t offer any packages, there are a plethora of accessories. We have equipped with chrome alloy wheel locks, activity mount, black alloy wheel locks, black emblem overlays, body side moldings, door edge guards, mudguards, paint protection film, roof crossbars, and tow hitch receivers.

The interior gets an all-weather floor liners package, cargo net and tote, cargo floor mat package, coin holder and ashtray cup, emergency assistance kit, first aid kit, illuminated cargo, and door sills. Essential accessories like a dashcam, key gloves, quick charge cable, logo side puddle lamp, and a universal tablet holder are fitted too. Therefore, the total cost of a fully optioned 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander stands at $65,764 with $6,304 worth of upgrades added.

A Fully Optioned 2023 Toyota Highlander Is Costlier Than A Grand Highlander

We start to make the most expensive Toyota Highlander by choosing the Platinum trim model, starting at $49,475. The standard 2.4-liter turbocharged inline-four, front-wheel-drive unit, and eight-speed automatic gearbox are replaced by the optional 2.5-liter hybrid inline-four engine with an all-wheel-drive system and a CVT gearbox, all of which added $3,550.

The Highlander offers eight color choices, three of which costs $425. We drape the Highlander with Moon Dust paint to give it a distinctive look. The interior, on the other hand, provides four choices, with all of them being a no-cost upgrade.

Similar to the Grand Highlander Platinum, the Highlander’s top trim doesn’t provide any packages for embellishments. However, the Highlander offers 72 accessories as the Grand Highlander.

The Highlander offers a heap of ARB, Yakima, Kurgo, and Domestic-sourced accessories for adventure enthusiasts. Goodies like cargo boxes, cold storage boxes, electric coolers, cubbies, trays, pet first aid kits, harnesses, rooftop racks, mounts, and various other accessories added a considerable amount.

The optional paint, hybrid engine, and a bunch of accessories added a hefty $22,148. Hence, the final price of the most expensive 2023 Toyota Highlander stands at $72,958.

2023 Toyota Highlander Vs 2023 Grand Highlander: Specs Comparison

Both SUVs have skin-deep differences besides their unique styling. The Highlander was launched in the 2000s, whereas the Grand Highlander was introduced in 2023 as its larger and posher sibling.

Furthermore, Toyota launched the redesigned Highlander last year, which makes it different from the latter looks-wise. Being newer, the Grand Highlander benefits from Toyota’s fresh styling and looks sharper despite its larger dimensions.

In terms of exterior specs, the Grand Highlander rides on a 3.9-inch larger wheelbase and is 6.5 inches larger, 2.3 inches wider, and a couple of inches taller than the Highlander. The Highlander’s curb weight ranges from 4,155-4,453 lbs, while the slightly larger Grand Highlander’s mass ranges from 4,300-4,920 lbs. Both SUVs offer 8 inches of ground clearance.

Exterior Specs:

The Grand Highlander’s larger body and wheelbase help it delivers a larger cabin. While both SUVs seat seven-eight passengers, the Grand Highlander steps up with a more beautiful layout, material quality, features, and, most importantly, space.

The Highlander offers a total passenger volume of 144.5 cu-ft, while the Grand Highlander provides more room with 153.3 cu-ft. Furthermore, the Grand Highlander’s all three rows have better space.

When it comes to safety and creature comforts, the Grand Highlander gets high praise.

The Highlander’s lower trims come to bring a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch touchscreen. However, all Grand Highlander trims have a 12.3-inch touchscreen as standard. Furthermore, the Grand Highlander offers heated and ventilated second-row seats as well as TSS 3.0 while the Highlander offers heated second-row seats and TSS 2.5.

Interior Specs:

Another major advantage of the Grand Highlander is its larger cargo space. The Grand Highlander comes with 20.6 cu-ft of standard cargo capacity compared to 16 cu-ft of Highlander. Both SUVs bring foldable seats that add extra storage space. The Grand Highlander’s larger passenger room yields a roomier cargo space once the seats are folded.
