GM Reveals More About Customer Corvette Racing

Here’s what’s known so far…

We already covered the shocking news that factory Corvette racing is going away, something which saddened and angered many. Probably to help calm everyone down, GM has confirmed with DailySportsCar.com how its customer Corvette racing program will be run moving forward.

A total of eight customer Z06 GT3.R cars will be fielded for competition in IMSA, SRO championships, and the FIA WEC for 2024. Four of those will be competing in IMSA Weathertech, with two each in the remainders.

Supposedly, the idea is that with four cars in IMSA, two should be in GTD and two in GTD Pro. Exactly how that will work out hasn’t been revealed, but reportedly the Pratt Miller organization is behind the GTD Pro effort.

The identities of all eight customer race teams are being kept under wraps for now. We’re not sure when those will be revealed, but it will be interesting to see who has been selected for the different series.

“There is a plan in place to start confirming our customer teams, and I think fans will be very happy with the organizations we have chosen,” Laura Wontrop Klauser, GM Sports Car Racing Manager, told DailySportsCar.com.

Wontrop Klauser went on to claim GM has been planning on having factory-supported teams for “some time.” She said the company will help provide everything those teams need to be successful with the Corvette Z06 GT3.R. Considering the brand image is very much on the line, that’s actually believable. However, results may vary.

It’s to be expected that there’s a high level of skepticism about what comes next. The factory Corvette team was quite popular with fans, so these customer teams have some big shoes to fill. Hopefully they’re able to step up, do well, and calm concerns.
