German car manufacturer BMW is one of the biggest names in the auto industry today. From sports cars to luxury sedans, BMW certainly has known what they’re doing for decades now, always locking heads with compatriots Mercedes-Benz. The result of this little rivalry is that consumers and enthusiasts have constantly gotten increasingly powerful vehicles from BMW over the years. In fact, today, some of their most powerful vehicles are SUVs instead of sedans, which boast some scarily ludicrous torque.
Many of the fastest BMW cars ride on a twin-turbo V8 engine, as they rightly should. If you’re on the side of the Bavarians, they won’t let you down with some of their fastest, most powerful BMWS. In that vein, here are the 10 most powerful BMW cars ever made.
10 BMW M3 GTS – 444 HP
In order to build a GTS version of their M3 in 2010, BMW shaved off over 100 lbs from their standard M3, equipped it with a more powerful engine along with a stiffer suspension. The new M3 GTS then rode on a 4.4-liter V8 making 444 horsepower with 324 lb-ft of torque.
Even though this M3 GTS never came to the United States, this beast could go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, topping out at 190 mph.
9 BMW M4 DTM Champion – 493 HP
This special edition BMW M4 was made in honor of Marco Wittmann, the 2-time winner of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters twice. Wrapped in Alpine White with M-racing stripes all over the exterior, the M4 DTM Champion was certainly a sight to behold.
The M4 DTM Champion came with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six motor, making 493 horsepower with 443 lb-ft of torque. A 3.8-second 0 to 60 time made it one of the fastest BMWs of its time in 2016, courtesy of it being lighter than the M4 Competition package, along with 49 more horses.
8 2021 BMW M3 Competition – 503 HP
BMW was all about ‘saving the manuals’ with the BMW M3, but the 2021 M3 Competition only came with an automatic transmission. The M3 Competition is one of the most iconic driver’s cars from the brand, with 503 horses under the hood and a stiff-riding chassis, delivering a proper race car experience to enthusiasts.
The M3 Competition was able to go from 0 to 60 in 3.0 seconds, topping out at 180 mph. The great driving mannerisms of this BMW sports car are almost good enough to make you ignore its god-awful kidney-shaped front grille. Almost.
7 BMW M850i – 523 HP
Despite being a coupe, the 2018 BMW M850i was a pretty massive machine. A big car with a big 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 underneath, the M850i made a whopping 523 horsepower with 553 lb-ft of torque.
Able to go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, the M850i’s xDrive system helped the car launch with little wheel spin, and it absolutely excels at corners and bends. This 8 Series coupe finished the quarter-mile in 11.5 seconds, at an impressive 123 mph.
6 BMW M4 CSL – 543 HP
The 2023 M4 CSL is a beautiful car we can’t stop looking at. This M4 is armed with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six power unit, and it takes its ‘Competition Sports Lightweight’ designation quite seriously.
With 543 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, the BMW M4 CSL boasts a top speed of 191 mph, while going from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds. The CSL is 240 lbs lighter than the M4 Competition, and holds 40 more horsepower over the M4 Competition, thus becoming the fastest BMW sports car.
5 BMW iX M60 – 610 HP
BMW calls their iX M60 an all-electric ‘Sports Activity Vehicle’. With a 190 kW motor at the front and a 360 kW motor at the rear, the iX M60 achieves a maximum of 610 horsepower, even though it can get to that figure in just 10 seconds.
Default power for the iX M60 ‘SAV’ is 532 horsepower, but the most impressive figure here is the big vehicle’s 749 lb-ft of torque. One of the fastest SUVs on the planet, the BMW iX M60 can reach the 60 mph mark in just 3.6 seconds. This makes the iX M60 the second-fastest BMW SUV, right behind the XM Label Red.
4 BMW X6M Competition – 617 HP
A rear-biased AWD beast of an SUV, the BMW X6M Competition takes everything great about the X6M, like its superb handling, tight suspension, and fantastic interior, and dials it up a notch.
The X6M provides 617 horsepower, a melodious M-Sport exhaust, and sport seats which make the overall package even sweeter. The sloping rear-roof-line continues to cut a striking figure on the roads, and the X6M’s Competition package takes the SUV from 0 to 60 in just 3.6 seconds.
3 BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupe – 617 HP
BMW’s 2023 M8 Gran Coupe rides on the mighty 4.4-liter V8 engine that arms it with 617 horsepower along with 553 lb-ft of torque, which sends power to all four wheels.
There is even a selectable RWD mode in the M8 Competition Gran Coupe, for when you’re feeling particularly drifty. A 2.7-second 0 to 60 time is no joking matter, and the BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupe finished the quarter-mile just shy of 10 seconds with a 10.8-second time at 129 mph.
2 BMW M5 CS – 627 HP
The fastest BMW car that isn’t a coupe or an SUV, the BMW M5 CS is one heck of a rocket. Equipped with the M5 Competition’s twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, it rides on a staggering 627 horsepower with 553 lb-ft torque. Compared to the M5 Competition, the CS weighs 147 lbs lighter, too.
All of this combines for a phenomenal 2.6-second 0 to 60 mph time, and the M5 CS goes as far up as 190 mph on the speedometer. The fastest BMW sedan, the M5 CS retails for $142,000.
1 BMW XM Label Red – 735 HP

With the XM Label Red, BMW paired their trusty twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine with a 145 kW. The limited-edition Label Red XM SUV rides on 738 horsepower, with about a 3.5-second 0 to 60 time.
This is the fastest BMW SUV, and right in the league of its contemporary performance SUVs like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid and the Lamborghini Urus.
